Not a fighter that's discussed enough in my opinion. Doesn't he have a near record setting amount of first round knockouts for a Heavyweight? From what I know about him he was far more refined then his brother, and could actually box. Quite a bit larger as well, a legitmate super heavyweight. He also knocked Louis down, which his brother couldn't manage. So, thoughts on Buddy?
Buddy was a big guy 6"6 240-250 and he had some good power...he had a bit of a built up career early on but he did have a 52-5-0 record going into Louis 1...I think he would be competitive today
I just taped "Louis-Baer 1 & 2" last night off of ESPN Classics...... Baer came to fight in the first meeting in 1941, and even decked Louis through the ropes in Washington D.C. at Griffith stadium.... However, come the '42 rematch, Buddy Baer looked slow and scared as he collapsed from Louis' initial onslaught in rd. ONE!!! MR.BILL
Buddy Baer looked to me like a huge "Bully" type fighter looking to KO his man early.... If that fails, he looks for an exit route out of the ring..... Buddy Baer didn't seem to me to be a long term player....... Cheers... MR.BILL
I remember watching Buddy/Louis I and it was frightening how good his chin was. Much like Max he went down from an ungodly accumulation of punishment. He must of simply not been there mentally the second time around. Then again, that's how Max was stopped against Louis as well.
I know that the man in my avatar and probably the greatest fighter from my country Gunnar Bärlund once beat Buddy Baer by TKO (Bärlund was outweighed by 42 lbs). I think he was a good contender but what stands out the most to me is how he preferred to fight on the inside even though he was 6'6-6'7. Perhaps he would've been even better if he had been taught to use his reach since he was much bigger than the majority of the heavyweights of his day. Buddy showed alot of heart against simon. took a tremendous beating in the first, and came back to knock him out in the 3rd.
"Mad" Max Baer came to KO Louis early in '35...... I have that fight on tape, as well... BUT! Baer became discouraged when he landed several heavy blows and Louis stood his ground and fired back....... Louis took Max Baer's heart away in 1935.... Peace.... SR.BILLARDO
This is a clasic case of a guy born in the wrong era. He held the record for the most first round KOs outside of Dempsey for some time. He was unlucky to get his day in court against the best version of Louis that there ever was.
espn is pretty bad in regards to the baer fights. I have the first fight complete. amazing action until round 6. A great slugging fight.
Buddy Baer played the Giant in the '53 film: Abbott and Costello's "Jack and the Beanstalk." It is in color..... Max and Buddy Baer were a partnership in A & C's "Africa Screams" from 1949... I got all this ****, too.......... MR.BILL
