The point deduction was fair, a DQ would have been stupid. That French guy battled back well. Fair play to him.

i was just about to say this.

the ref should have ignored the gumshield , picked it up and allowed thaxton to press the fight and if the frenchman survived the round then gave him his gumshield back in his corner.

because it was a temple shot, it ****ed up his
equilibrium and any thaxton follow up at that point would have put him down.

a DQ would have been harsh not stupid, he blatently cheated. like its already been said the ref should have continued the round and then given the gum shield back at the end of the round providing he survived and then deducted a point for time wasting

this may sound extreme but other boxers might see the footage and do the same

the same thing when corrales spat it out twice against castillo. he would have lost that fight if he didn't spit it out. should be a DQ in those circumstances.

i think theirs a need for a change in the rules

along the lines of spit your gumshield out the fight continues regardless and at the end of the round he gets a deducted a point

    thus stopping disgraceful cheating

Spiting out the mouthpiece intentionally is an indication that the fighter does not want to fight.
The appropriiate action should have been taken by the referree, especially if the fighter had just been floored and that would be to stop the contest..

In a way I felt that KD was the worst thing that happened to Thaxton, the Frenchie managed to get his senses back with all that gumshield business but when the fight was restarted, Thaxton got careless looking for that KO and took a lot of counter punch leather for his troubles. I think that's what left him in a bad position later in the fight when his tank had run empty.

i never thought of it that way

the problem was he was cheating not surrendering, i guess you could count it as a stoppage that would definatly stop it happening again

    great post:good

he didnt have his senses back for at the very least 30 seconds after the incident, the frenchman would have been KOd with the right hand thaxton had poised just after the restart but just before the incident

This. Same with Hopkins faking injury against Calzaghe, correct action would be just to stop the fight.

That's my point, he was ready to go at that point but by the time the referee had stopped the bout to let him get his mouthpiece back, sent both man back to their corners, indicated to the judges that 1 point had to be deducted and then let them continue, Mezaache had regained himself but Thaxton barged in looking for the KO anyways because he sensed weakness from the KD.

This continued for the next 3 rounds and Thaxton took a lot out of himself doing it.

why can't the ref take the point off at the end of the round instead of during the action, giving the guy alot more time to recover.
