I know it's been done before, but please list all of these world class fighters that Eurobum Calslappy ducked, along with the details of how Calzaghe backed out or made excuses.
Honestly, it's not about Calzaghe outright "ducking" people. It's that he legitimately spent from 1997 (after Eubank) to 2006 (before Lacy) fighting to defend a useless WBO belt, against mandatories and mediocre competition (with some bums in there as well), not looking to expand his horizons by going after other title belts, within Super Middleweight or other divisions. The fact of the matter is that Calzaghe was much more a "businessman" than a fighter fighting for his legacy. So, do I think he was ducking people outright? Maybe not. But, he certainly wasn't putting forth a big effort to fight people during Calzaghe's "prime" years. Whether or not he ducked people is largely irrelevant at this point. The thing is, Calzaghe's big wins are a 43 year old HOFer who he beat by a slim margin, an overrated American in Lacy (who himself never beat anyone worthwhile, a win of Eubank whose career was just about over, and fighting a Roy Jones who has been shot for 5 years... For a career spanning 45 fights and 23 title defenses, it's not much of a resume. And up until 2006, for the first 40 fights of his career, the only name on his resume was Eubank. I don't attack Calzaghe, but a man has to be judged by his work. Calzaghe dominated a soft division, against soft competition, and only stepped up to fight "big fights" against legends once those legends were either OLD, SHOT, or BOTH. And Calzaghe, the businessman that he is, did it to grab a couple big paydays, before retiring...
Kessler was Calzaghe on a lesser level. A titlist in a weak division, with 40 fights and no defining wins, fighting weak competition. Kessler honestly never fought anyone before Calzaghe. In this day and age, how can you be a great fighter with 40 fights, and have a resume of people that no one ever heard of?
His best win? Beating a guy who also beat no one? C'mon... At least with Hopkins, he beat an over the hill HOFer. With Kessler, he beat a guy who had no top-level experience.
