Calzaghe: An Analysis

    Here’s my analytical rundown of Calzaghe. No I am not digging him but what I am doing is factually presenting statistics as I personally see them going by what I watch / read.

    He's getting close to 40 years old and he just fought his 2 biggest fights of his career:

    He beat a one dimensional Jeff Lacy who was NOT a big name in the US regardless of what anyone overseas says. And he beat Kessler who is a pretty good supermiddleweight who hasnt really fought the greatest competition. Those are his 2 biggest wins and what he gets the most praise for.


    His Competition excluding Kessler and Lacy:

    Other then a past his prime Eubanks who has Calzaghe fought??? His RECENT wins were against Sakio Bika and Peter Manfredo :rofl . Yet people want to talk about Hopkins resume?? Calzaghe fought the majority of his fights over in his backyard against a bunch of nobodys. If you don't believe me go and look at his record and look at the opponents names. You'll probably know 3 or 4 of them if you're lucky!

    The losses

    He doesn't have any at the moment.. WHY??? Because he's just stepping it up towards the end of his career and finally fighting decent competition.


    The Pros (as I see them)

    He has very fast hands for a Super Middleweight and he beat Kessler who I thought would of beat him. I'll give him his due for that.

    Conclusion

    Basically what I am getting it is Calzaghe isn’t this all conquering supremely smart fighter so many people think he is (in my view). Good yes, great, maybe. Legend? No. I’ve followed boxing some years and Calzaghe deserves props for what he’s done yet the whole legend and super-smart image only manifested itself AFTER the Lacy win and before then i recall many fans questioning him on this very board!!!!!!!


    I’m not saying Bernard is any better. Many say he is a comfort zone cherry picking fighter but what I am saying and what needs to be illustrated is Calzaghe isn’t this zeus-like figure of boxing he is far far too often made out to be, sorry guys. There’s the facts, take them as they are.

    You're a brave man posting that here, they're going to tear you a new one.

    I tend to agree (although you confused me for a bit with the comments that were obviously about Hopkins). Calzaghe is a very very good fighter but some of the things said about him on this forum are just ridiculous.

    Very accurate analysis, alot better than MasterCalzaghe's.

    It always seems to me Calzaghe fans are always attacking us Hopkins fans.
    Maybe im just biased but it seems they start it more often. Honestly, they
    both dont have the best of resumes but I think Hops has fought slightly better competition.

    I agree completely. It just seems like on this board, there are so many die hard Calzaghe fans who simply over hype the guy. We know he's good but they make it seem like he's done incredible things.

    no Joe is a overhyped by some. I just love watching him fight and am a fan. But I'm not labeling him a legend by any means just yet.

    That MasterCalzaghe got a sickness, he's one of them guys that probably has a shrine of Joe Calzaghe's in his bedroom, with Jesus' face cut out of it and replaced with Joe's, where he probably lights candles and worships it before he goes to bed at night.:rofl :-(

    I suppose Calzaghe's argument would be that who else could he have fought? Jones and Hopkins are very difficult fights to make at the best of times. Ottke was never willing to fight anyone so when you look at the number of world champs on calzaghe's 'resume' it isn't that light. Whatever the arguments about the past though, if calzaghe really is intending to retire within the year when there are now potential big fights out there it will be very disappointing. Not everyone can do a BHop and keep going but it would be a shame if some potential match-ups didn't come off. He's hanging onto the supermiddle belts for a reason so if they both keep winning then Calzaghe-Pavlik at supermiddle end of this year/next yr would be a *******. As well as the winners of the Tarver-Woods-Dawson affair

    Anyone who knows anything about boxing should have the common sense to know that Calzaghe is excellent boxer.

    Yeah, he's a damn good boxer. Mikkel could hold his own against anyone I can think of in or around his weight class.
