As I have said before I think Fitz stops Joe in his era and Im fairly certain of this...I think Joe probably would edge it if they were to fight today, Fitz would have to adjust to a different era, with different rules and interpretations of them.

Fitz was a BOMBER. KO'd guys with one punch, a nasty left hook. While he'd have to adjust to Joe's work rate, I'd see him stopping Joe in the middle to late rounds - that is, if he can get past that work rate.

On film Fitz looks pretty primitive so Calzaghe should be favoured to box rings round him, although Joe himself does leave openings and can be easy to tag, very open to straight rights especially. Fitz could potentially KO Joe then, otherwise Calzaghe UD

Glove size would be a key factor since I dont think Calzaghes hands could hold up with 4oz mitts.

Lets imagine Calzaghe had been born into another era.

Calzaghe himself is 'primative' and more of a natural fighter than a technician even in this era, so he would be more or less the same as he is now even in 1780. For this reason I see Calzaghe hugely dominant in any era for era matchups, where you take into account modern advantages sports science, drugs and boxing knowledge.

BIG DEE HERE= Fitzsimmons by KO as he walks thru Calzaghe`s pitter-pat punches to KO Calzaghe. If Fitzsimmons could take Jeffries big shots for 11rds and then 8 rds he can walk right thru Calzaghe`s bull**** he throws.

If Fitz can land something big, Calzaghe is in some ****. IF he lands, though. Fitzsimmons was a powerful SOB.

The way I see it is Fitz by KO or Joe by decision. Two vastly different fighting styles. They both moved differently. They had different stances. They held thier hands differently. They boxed differently. Joe was faster and moved more. Fitz was the more powerful puncher. Who takes it? Tough one to call. I tend to lean towards Joe but Fitz, if he catches him just right could certainly end it.

    Calzaghe would totally outbox Fitzsimmons.
