Hagler in his prime was an overall better technical fighter. A much superior jab, sharper and more accurate punching, an excellent footwork. At his best he beats Calzaghe, most likely by decision in a competitive fight over 15 rounds. People take too much from the Hearns fight and most think of Hagler as a straight-forward brawler, which at his prime he was far from. The Hagler of the Sibson fight was as complete a fighter as you will see.
But Calzaghe can throw accurate punches and huge barrage of them and has a good jab as well. Maybe he could beat a prime Hagler.:think
He can, but not as well as Hagler. Marvin's jab was vastly superior, it was sharp and accurate. He cut people up with that jab and dropped people with it. Calzaghe is talented and would always be competitive throughout, but Hagler at his best was simply a superior fighter all-around.
Nigel Benn knocked Eubank down too, and so did Michael Watson. The Calzaghe knock-down was nothing to write home about, Eubank got caught with Calzaghes Sunday best punch and was up before the ref even started counting, waving his glove and smiling as if to say "yeah, OK I didn't see it" Calzaghes power is vastly over-rated and his hand excuses are getting tired now, the fact is he doesn't hit very hard. Hagler would murder him, the size difference is there yes but Hagler has a concrete chin and at least twice the boxing ability of Calzaghe. It's not even a close fight, Hagler by ownage. The only fighter in the last 20 years I'd pick to beat Hagler of similar weight is Roy Jones purely because speed kills. Toney, Hopkins, Calzaghe, McCallum etc etc would all have been owned by prime Hagler.
Hagler in his prime had better defense than Calzaghe. He was a superb technical boxer. The pre-title Hagler and into the first couple of years of his reign was better at pretty much everything except handspeed. The Hagler that dominated Tony Sibson would beat any version of Calzaghe in a relatively close fight.
Hagler probably loses a competitive decision to the bigger, fster and equally (maybe more) skilled and equally iron-jawed Calzaghe. But that's not why I'm posting. WTF happened with your avatar ??? I can hardly believe my eyes !!!
160 or 168 Hagler would be fine he is always in great shape mentally and physically he wouldn't fight Calzaghe like Hopkins. The difference with Hagler and Hopkins Marvin jabbed more than Bernard Joe's speed and slickness wouldn't bother Hagler you don't no slicker than Duran and faster than Leonard who were both a bit better defensive than Joe. The knockout down of Calzaghe in the first round to Hopkins is a big eye opener if Hagler did that he goes for the kill. My prediction Hagler is to solid in all areas to rough, just like Joe don't stop coming and he throw more punches per round than Bernard plus Hagler was great southpaw or orthrodox Hagler 8 or 9th round tko enzo throws in the towel. Simlar to Hopkins/Pavilk but Joe gets stopped.
