I just got done rewatching Camacho vs Limon (I'm currently looking at a lot of southpaw vs southpaw matches), and after the fight he was calling out bazooka Gomez. Was there ever any serious talks between these guys or was camacho merely running off at the mouth??? Camacho had just won the SFW and Gomez had just left the SBW division and was eying the FW title of Laporte...was there any talk of Gomez skipping FW and going straight to SFW??? By the time Gomez moved to SFW in 85 Camacho had already moved into the LW division...was this fight ever on the radar or was Camacho merely talking???

What would happen could Gomez have anything for the young Camacho in the 83-84 years????

I still have not heard anything between 83-84 and was still wondering if anyone knew if this was a talked about fight and if so why didn't it come off???

A friend just sent me a link that Camacho and Gomez were talking about a fight in 85 where Camacho would make his first defense against Gomez rather than the Rosario fight that actually took place (and Gomez/Lockridge). Was this a serious talk and if so what led to Camacho/Gomez missing each other???

After the Sanchez defeat , Gomez went back down to SB. Had a great fight with Pintor. He did eventually go to Feather. but had a couple of good wins. but hes not as effective at the weight. & at SuperFeather. Gomez' effectiveness was further reduced. as evidenced by his brutal stoppage loss in losing his SF title... Camacho young and brash, wouldn't seem to have much trouble with this faded version of Gomez...

This would have been a bad match for Gomez, at Hector's best weight, and I think Wilfredo knew it.

Oh I agree completely....so why did camacho have such a hard on for Gomez...calling him out for 3 years, hasseling him at his fights and in public venues! was Camacho looking for a money fight he knew he could win or did he have some natural animosity for gomez???

It's a business first, and Wilfredo certainly would have been good business. Naturally, Camacho would highly covet what he'd expect to be an "easy" money fight. He obviously wasn't shy about taking on headliners like the dormant Mancini (who did far better than I'd have expected for somebody off a four year layoff), SRL (which produced the result I expected with Camacho-Mancini) or Duran (who got the best of him the first time, and was not forced into retirement by him following their rematch-a car crash did that). Gomez even had issues making weight for Sanchez, so maybe Hector expected that a lucrative scenario where Wilfredo didn't have to worry about making weight would be too tempting to pass up. However, Gomez became more concerned about his legacy following the shellacking Sal dished out, and craved the redemption he achieved with Pintor in their toy Manila.

For Hector to have engaged in 88 bouts until age 48 without ever being stopped is obscene, and he may well be a first ballot HOFer when the time comes, but he did come up far short of what he could have realized in terms of potential and accomplishments, and he never really established himself as the kind of dominant champion Wilfredo was at 122. On that basis, perhaps Hector did hold some animosity towards Gomez, afflicted with a taint of the green eyed monster. Prior to Sanchez, many acclaimed Gomez as the P4P best, an accolade which eluded Camacho. (Hector has only himself to blame for this. At his 130 pound peak, he may have been close to invincible, but simply didn't hang around long enough to really nail down the sort of legacy his desired opponent already possessed.)

Camacho just too big and fast for Gomez... Gomez was nothing special at 126 or 130 pounds... Gomez left his glamour at 122.....

Which seems odd, because there were legendary stories of Gomez battling to make 122 Lbs.

Gomez is like 175 pounds today and all puffy... He's like Duran in a way... Neither man looks like a former great fighter by modern appearance...

Hector would've destroyed Wilfredo in three rounds.

it's weird that 4 pounds makes such a difference, especially for a fighter as brilliant as gomez

Gomez wasn't a big guy, he just liked partying. Anything above 122 lbs meant he could take training less seriously. Wouldn't have been impossible for him by any means to have fought at bantamweight early on in his career.

GOmez wasnt that good at JL... When he fought Lockridge, Rocky won most of the early and mid rounds, but became lethargic and let Gomez outhustle him in the late rounds. Gomez was still lucky to get the decision... Camacho stops that Gomez within 5 easy rounds.

The Gomez that beat a prime Laporte a couple years before, was still a pretty good fighter.. When i met Laporte i asked about that fight and wondered why he seemed a little more laid back in that fight(showed him to much respect)... Juan made no excuses and said Gomez was still a helluva fighter and was just the better man.

BUt even that Gomez wouldnt have carried his power to JL and didnt have the speed he had at JF.. He would need both to have a shot at a prime Camacho.. He would hang in there and have flashes of brilliance against Camacho..But for the most part Camacho is to fast, young and he would drop Gomez a couple times en route to mid to late ko.

    Camacho ko 9

Gomez today, and for years, is almost unrecognizeable from his former self...talk about a guy just letting himself go..
