Quantity versus quality, does the sheer size of Carnera mean he keeps Sam off and bludgeons and cuffs his way to a win ? Or,can Sam lead him into a trap that enables him to land his left hook and demolish the giant? Nearly a foot in height and about70lbs in weight, separates them,Loughran survived the route , he had great skill with no power, Langford was not in his class as a boxer, but he hit like few men can.
I don't really see this fight as much of a contest...Carnera had size and strength, but I think Langford would gradually chop him down. The Langford on film against Jeanette (IMO) would set up his shots by feinting and digging hard to Carnera's body...For me Langford would stop him in 11-12 rds...
I would anticipate Langford getting some sort of stoppage win. I don't think Carnera would be able to take what he could dish out.
I am thinking Langford was the greater fighter and should prevail, however Primo had incredible heart and some boxing skills and with Manny Stewart in his corner may be able to utilize his height better. However Sam was one of the size doesn't matter group, he had freakish power and got inside with angles at his comfort range. Sam should get the stop
Agreed with all here and partially because along with everything else Sam had long arms, that would help negate the height advantage Primo had. In shape Sam ko'd better big men.
Am I bonkers for giving Carnerna a good chance? Langford is the obvious favourite and it's likely he stops Primo, but I think it would be close until that point, competitive at the very least.
Its blasphemy to say but I give Carnera a chance. Look at Langfords record against big tall guys. He has a lot more draws and losses than wins and kos. Based on greatness alone id pick Langford but id say by decision and I wouldnt be surprised if he lost.
It's almost impossible to say. We don't have any film of Langford v guys this size so yeah you're kind of basing it off his record, what you hear of him. One story comes to mind, told by Fulton's manager and I think repeated in Clay's book on Langford. He said that he gave Fulton instructions just to jab - jab jab jab, no right hands at all. Fulton dominated but in, say, round three, he threw a right hand and old Langford immediately countered missing his much bigger foe by an absolute whisker with that counter-punch. Based upon this, and his early domination of Wills (who, even green, i will guess was better and more disciplined than Carnera) I think i'll go for Langford by stoppage. I don't think Carnera had the wherewithal on defence or the discipline to keep Langford out for any length of time.
I still think Langford takes this...but I don't think it's the same slam dunk for Langford as I once did...Langford no question is the greater fighter, but fighting against the size disparity in this match up...it would not be easy. Sam could get it done...but it's up hill.
My thoughts. 10" of height and eleven in reach is nothing to sneeze at, but I'm not sure Primo ever knocked out anybody close to as slick or tough as BTB. What is his best actual KO? I guess on paper Sharkey, but don't most feel the Gob went in the tank? In any event, even if not he was badly out of shape and was never, on his best day, as slick or tough (or, well, good at anything) as Langford. ...which leaves the scenario of Primo managing to outbox Sam. ASFEBKHAFE. Excuse me, I just laughed so hard I convulsed (and projectile vomited all over the monitor) while typing.
Hey IB... I don't think Langford would lose...I just think it's a mess of a fight, as in awkward and ugly mess. Langford would win going away, but trying to move around that mass of humanity, cuffing and holding, it's not going to be easy.
