Giardello the better all around fighter. Taking nothing away from Cerdan but Giardello at his best was a good as they come. An in shape and prime Giardello had a solid chance to beat any middle ever.
absolutely agree. from what i've read, cerdan had solid fundamentals and was physically quite strong. i've seen very limited footage and there's nothing available from his true, earlier prime but i see an eager and focused giardello with too many tools and too much skill. overcomes some rough patches for a 10-5 type decision
Having seen Marcel Cerdan fight and Joey Giardello fight a common opponent Harold Green, I come to the conclusion that both at their best's Marcel Cerdan whips Joey Giardello...In 1950 at the Eastern Parkway Arena I saw a neighbor of mine Harold Green flatten Joey Giardello in the 6th round with one left hook to the button...But three years before in 1947, i watched Marcel Cerdan absolutely wreck Harold Green in the 2nd round at MSG. Harold Green was at his peak at that time ...I also saw Marcel Cerdan in his first fight in America beat a great underated MW Georgie Abrams in a torrid fight. Yes Abrams was past his peak, but I would bet on Georgie Abrams of that night to beat Joey Giardello at HIS best H2H... Cerdan was a terrific swarmer at his best, and I saw the real Cerdan and not the Marcel Cerdan of the LaMotta fight who hurt his shoulder in the first round when LaMotta wrestled him to the ground and Cerdan was a one handed fighter until the 10th round... Boxing is styles and Cerdan vs Giardello would be similar to the Henry Armstrong / Barney Ross fight in styles, not in calibre...Don't underestimate Marcel Cerdan...
