I always thought Murray was a very talented guy who just never put it together. Had a nice run from 1992-94 before being outworked by durable Jake Rodriguez. Tall for a jr. welter at 5' 10" and a skilled boxer/puncher, I don't know if Murray just didn't put in the effort in the gym or maybe didn't have the mental makeup to be a top guy for any duration. The loss to Rodriguez effectively ended his career as he was never the same. Thoughts? Where would you put his prime today among jr. welters? I think he could give current guys like Bradley and Urango a tough time.
Very talented fighter, and part of the tripple threat team consisting of Ray Mercer, Alfred Cole and of course Murray himself. I saw many of his early matches on such venues as ESPN, where the other two team members fought a number of their early matches. I enjoyed watching all three, and thought that Murray had a real future ahead of him. I vaguely remember his match with Terrence Ali - another regular on ESPN, and felt that Murray deserved the nod in the decision even though Ali got it. As it turned out, Murray's potential was never completely fulfilled, or may not have been as much as some originally thought. Still a good fighter though.
He looked like the can't miss star of the Robert's stable, I certainly brought into the hype. He was supposed to of been almost punch perfect beating the teak tough 25 year old Micky Ward. He was never quite so Natural post Alli, and probably was overrated, but as mentioned, The Snake was a wily fighter, who was on a confidence boosting run, with talk of him schooling Chavez in sparring and even allegedly Whitaker thinking twice about fighting him. But he did have names in his win column, who although past their best, were still only beaten by proper contenders at the time (Fuentes; Bramble; LaPorte; Moore and Hooper). And I am guessing the punch stat counters had their work cut out to keep up with the Olivares fights!
Should have gone to the olympics but got robbed against Todd Foster in the box-offs. Smooth boxer with pop in his righthand.Moved very quickly through the ranks and ran into Ali where he dropped a spit decision.Rebounded and captured a title and lost it in an upset to the Snake. But in that bout Murray basically slept walked through the entire bout-years latter they met again and Murray beat the hell out of Jake. I think he had alot of out of the ring problems during his career-you have to remember that everything came very quickly to him. Todays jr.welters?Urango/Hatton would get schooled by Murray.Mayweather would beat him but Murray would give him a difficult fight.
He did have talent, but not enough to take it to the next level. I think all those triple threat fighters were underachievers. Murry had no right losing to Jake Rodriguez. But I guess thats a perfect example of not taking it to the next level!
Murray had an off night against Jake and when rematched years latter beat the hell out of Jake.Just because a fighter has a couple of losses dosen't mean he was overrated-they just didn't meet everyone expectations. In Murray's case it was his out of thr ring behaviour that really derailed his career. But make no mistake-When Murray was on he could box with the best of them.
