It's been nearly 3 years since the dodgy NC against Martinez and the subsequent giving up of the WBC belt and moving up a weight, two fights against very average opposition since then and all this after stating that he wanted to become a two weight World Champion. He's 30 early next year and these weight divisions are a young man's game, I'm not sure what the plan is other than to try and get a cheap shot at a belt like he did last time. I'd love him to grow a pair and call out Casimero for a rematch, that's what you do if you talk the talk that this lad does.
Last I heard of him was that he was training at Joe Gallagher's gym. There were a few murmurs of a fight between Charlie Edwards and Kal Yafai.
Kal Yafai hasn't fought in nearly two and a half years since he was iced out by Gonzales so I reckon he'd want a tune up or two first before taking what I suppose would be viewed as a grudge match given the history between the two. Either way there'd be no belt on the line, I just feel like Edwards mugged everyone and himself off moving up a weight and letting go of a belt in the process. He's gone from being WBC champ to becoming pretty much irrelevant. Huge fights are there for him against Inoue and Casimero but he'd rather tick by doing nothing.
It sounds a lot like he's done here, this was at the start of the year. The way he talks I don't know if it's all mental health issues and more that he just doesn't have the fighting mentality needed to dig deep. Easy to say but he's still hanging on excuses of the Martinez fight, then later saying that he can make Super Flyweight still when previously he said it was killing him. Sounds a lot like the absolute pasting he took off of Martinez, rag dolled on home turf after all the talk and build up and the ring entrance, has just shook him into the wilderness. Harsh but I've followed this lads career from the start and I just don't think he wants the smoke, Inoue would probably seriously hurt him. This content is protected
Honestly moving to Joe Gallagher after being with X many different trainers already felt like a last ditch effort at something that has probably already been dead in the water for a while now

Still no news on the next fight. I see he's back in the gym with Gallagher. He turned 30 last month, he hasn't fought in 15 months and that was only for 4 and a half minutes. Prior to that he went 10 rounds with Kyle Williams back in September 2020. This is way too long to be doing nothing. 19 fights in just over 8 years, ten of those were in the first two years of his career. So that's 9 fights in 6 years.
