Thanks fellas, but Isaiah Chase/Young Joe Louis/Jack Chase has a story that needs to be told. His story has not been told before. It has all the elements -failure, tragedy/sadness, triumph, drama, and mystery that an audience would want.

Thanks for reading this series. The third installment should be up early next week.

Nor can I. This is the type of boxing journalism that I absolutely cannot get enough of! I enjoy reading about all those excellent contenders who fell just short of their championship aspirations and are just to the left of the historical spotlight that shines on their more celebrated contemporaries.

I've been curious about Chase for years. I knew that he'd had a whole different life as "Young Joe Louis" and troubles with the law before coming here to Cali and knew that researching him was going to be difficult to say the least. I'm happy that someone else took on that daunting task and with such lucid and impressive results. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series.

BTW....the more you clear up the fog surrounding Chase the more I'm convinced of my first impression of him as something of a bigger, latter-day version of Jack Blackburn; a dangerous man with lots of pent-up rage and a lack of impulse control, drunk or sober. Does that sound about right?

He was a complicated character. Booze seemed to be a real problem, and he was without a doubt criminal-minded and going nowhere before boxing, well yes, saved him.

I went into the research with a mind wide open. No preconceptions. I found plenty of evidence about his character flaws, but also saw him evolve as a man. He tried to improve himself.

Really excellant stuff. This particular chapter hits me that Chase wasnt a 'bad guy' circumstance produced him to be 'criminal-minded' but his heart was in the right place. The way he helped his opponent to his corner really, for me, showed his good character.
