Correct Schommer was just a fat blob and a journeyman who had only fought twice in three years before the Eubank fight and he was about 35 years old as well. Eubank completely humiliated himself that night.
i dunno what fight you were watching mate but it was as clear as day that outta the 2 fights, Close had a case for the first one. I was in the ring for the 2nd fight and experienced don king first-hand protesting that the decision had 'nothing to do with him'. Not that he had to do that cos eubank clearly won the rematch, it was on the strength of the 1st fight that he was claiming that cos there was so much **** over it
again, what fight were you watching? its as clear as day close had an argument for the first fight. The second was clearly eubanks

Though as an aside, the commentators all thought Eubank won the first fight as well and were surprised at the draw, whereas they had the 2nd very close(and with Don King going mental in the ring claiming corruption, it seems so did he). Almost all of Eubank's fights that went the distance had certain contingents(press, fans etc) saying he had lost.Some of it was overblown out of dislike for the guy, the first close fight being one of the biggest examples imo.
Jim 'Negative' Watt had Eubank losing the first Close fight if I recall. Whereas McGuigan on the Eurosport commentary (replayed the following week) was always more fair towards Eubank, and would give him his just-dues.
