Fun fight to watch last night. Morales showed a lot skill and guile, and balls fighting that whole fight with his eye nearly shut. I am trying to put in perspective his place in the sport's history, both over the various divisions in which he fought and LB 4 LB, and just with his great championship pedigree. I would be interested in your thoughts.
Very good, massively entertaining fighter who was often as overestimated as he was good to watch. that said, you could put him in with most super-bantams/feathers and he would give a good account of himself win or lose.Except Vuyani Bungu.
I don't think this Maidana fight does anything for his ranking, he lost if after all and Maidana aint that good. I'm not wanting to **** on his parade but it has to be said.
And I didn't want to suggest this fight had a real significance on his legacy. It was a nice moment where a faded fighter showed some of the skills that once made him great... and a young buck came in under-trained to play along. I am more concerned with the previous 50 fights or so.
He has an ATG 'boxing-attitude' He's one of the few, rare boxers that come along(like Joe Frazier) that in my opinion, if you do not like him, then you are undeniabley an *******. An ATG lock in being an *******.
Last night didn't change anything, it just gave us a glimpse of his former greatness. I don't rate Maidana too much anyway, he's a dirty little fighter as well. With a more strict ref he could have lost a couple of points last night.
I think that the fight couldve very easily gone either way. And i think it made it very clear to us that today's crop of world class fighters are very poor to the talent around only 10-15 years ago. This was a shot to **** Bantam/Featherweight matching one of the top guys in his prime, certainly the most dangerous puncher, of today's Light Welterweight division
Aye I certainly didn't think he'd make it competitive, imagine if it was the Morales of 10 years ago.....
I'm flying back from Vegas right now. We knew Morales would give a valiant effort but I didn't think he would make it the distance. Not sure what it proves other than he's a proven stepping stone for young bulls. Khans speed will trouble Morales if they make that fight but I'm sure they will now. It's a big fight for Mexico and a big payday for both guys.
