Williams could be quicker to the punch, and force Cooney into a shell. Either way it's not lasting very long.
Gerry has a very serious speed deficit to overcome here. Big Cat did have a chance to unload on Liston first. I don't see Cooney spotting him an attack like that and weathering the storm. Cleveland had over 60 fights before turning 30. Take away the near fatal wounding and subsequent hospitalization, and he could well have reached 100 wins before retiring. (Let's not forget that he closed out his career by going 3-0 in 1972, when 39 years old. Beating Daniels over 12 rounds was a fairly credible performance at the time. He also beat talented prospects Gullick and Caldwell in his late 30s. Again, this was after he was shot.) At their respective bests, Williams would have enjoyed serious advantages in speed, experience and stamina.
i agree with the general tone of this thread. i just don't think cooney proved enough against real opposition. his best performance (and it was very good) was a losing effort against holmes. the young and norton fights told us he could beat shot old men. a prime williams was a different animal entirely. as has been said, he was quicker and notably, shorter, with his punches. i see him landing first, and often, with that poleaxe right hand in between cooney's wide hooks and as greatA suggested, going into a shell where the spinks beating will be made to look like a stroll in the park
Cooney would have a chance with the version of Williams that fought Ali..but that version of the Big Cat that rumbled before he fell vs Liston would be too much for him. The shots he rattled Liston with would tear Gerry's head off.
Williams was fast of the mark...but Cooney was even faster seeing as his record is littered with first/second round wins. Cooney wins in brutal fashion.
i really think this ia pick'em match-up and would come down to who lands first either way i dont see this going past the second at all, but i would agree the williams that faced ali would get beat by cooney
