clyde gray thoughts?

i think he was underrated he fought some good fighters and never really got the recognition he deserves:think

 

I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute, I've seen other discussions on him, and have looked at his record on boxrec. If you want to talk about Clyde Gray, I'd be happy to listen and learn more about him.

 

Very good fighter and a genuinely worthy contender.

Reminds me a bit of someone like Michael Watson or Richie Kates, in that he was just a really solid boxer-puncher who was good in most respects.

 

I agree, he was outstanding in almost every department. He could box, punch, take a shot, he could do 15 rounds no problem, he could adapt, he had heart and he fought often. Cuts seemed to be his only drawback.

clyde gray lived about 20 miles from me in nova scotia,he moved to toronto as did his brother stu and trained in the george chuvalo camp with irving ungerman as their manager.Stu was killed in a fight with al sparks in 1972 thats why the ali vs. chuvalo 2 bout was delayed that year.
Clyde was a great lil boxer who never got his due,by the way if your having a party don't invite gray and chuvalo,they had a parting of the way a few years back.im me if you want to kno more about clyde or stu

I really liked him until I saw him fight Pipino Cuevas.
Gray fought like he was scared shitless.

 

Clyde was also the Boxing Commish in Ontario for years.:goodIt has been a mess ever since he left office.

 

Yeah, he looked like he didn't want to be there that night, but to be fair he was a faded fighter by then, without much left to offer at world level.

he sometimes sparred with the fighters and you could see just how good he was

 

He'd been ground down and stopped by Guerrero in his previous fight (although so I had a feeling at the time that his fight with Cuevas wasn't going to be pretty to watch. Methinks the fighter who hung tough with Napoles four years earlier would have fared better, and made the fight more competitive at any rate.

Still, the thing that I remember about Gray was how dominant he was at the Canadian and Commenwealth level when there were a number of decent fighters from that nation (and region) floating around the division. Even if a fighter from that area was able to defeat him (like Guerrero and Chris Clarke), Gray would always get his revenge in fashion that was just as comprehensive in the rematch.

But, like everyone else has mentioned, he was a legitimate contender in a welterweight area that was quite good, and there's something to be said for that.
