anyway how good you think Conteh could have been?

 

the one handed conteh that we saw after he won his title was a very good fighter.the two handed version would have been an all time great

 

I think he was potentially great. Lovely boxer, hard as nails and a killer instinct. He took Saad Muhamad all the way in that first fight when he had already shown signs of deteriation before it.
I think he enjoyed his day in the sun to the full, wonder if he has any regrets looking back.

 

Thanks for that Al, i go the big house now sometimes, only when there's an all dayer on the go like, you get the cheap booze in there and when you're on it all day, it's a great place to get them in.

My ma used to have the chippy just over the road oand to the left a bit. was called Greedy's throughout the 90's, she said John's brother (i think, if not it was a family member)was always coimng in from his night's out. That was before all the other chippy owners got onto it that having chippy's round by bold street would be to hit a goldmine, so they left when that started happening.

 

Conteh was a name thrown out there at the time. You also had Schutte and Bobick mentioned as the other potential challengers. Evangelista got a title shot and Shavers was not perceived as all that big of a threat to Ali in 77. Nor was Jimmy Young. After Norton 3, there were lots of names mentioned and Conteh probably came as close as any to get the big sweepstakes bout for a nice payday.

 

Confessions time. So did I. I reckon that at least 75% of blokes in their teens or early twenties during the 1970's,did have that hairstyle,or something resembling it

 

If he'd reached his full potential,imo John Conteh would have been recognised as one of the top 3 lightheavyweights of all time.
