I think he was potentially great. Lovely boxer, hard as nails and a killer instinct. He took Saad Muhamad all the way in that first fight when he had already shown signs of deteriation before it. I think he enjoyed his day in the sun to the full, wonder if he has any regrets looking back.

Conteh was a name thrown out there at the time. You also had Schutte and Bobick mentioned as the other potential challengers. Evangelista got a title shot and Shavers was not perceived as all that big of a threat to Ali in 77. Nor was Jimmy Young. After Norton 3, there were lots of names mentioned and Conteh probably came as close as any to get the big sweepstakes bout for a nice payday.

If he'd reached his full potential,imo John Conteh would have been recognised as one of the top 3 lightheavyweights of all time.
