The cooney that smashed Norton version vs toney that stopped holyfield in 9. Would toney prove to intimidating for cooney and break him down? Or does the younger gerry beat the former middle weight?

I don't care how good Toney was, Cooney would be way too big for him and would smash him down.

I agree vince. Toney doesn't really get ko'd in many h 2 h on here. If he does lose its normally by Dec. But I feel cooney of Norton wouldn't give toney a chance to get set. He would be blasting away fast. Toney would try to roll but can see him been caught early and hurt.

    Hell no.

Toney loses but he aint being stopped. First of all cooney wasnt fast or clever enough to hit toney with a punch he doesnt see coming, and thats about the only way youll ever drop toney.

Cooney had power obviously and a decent finisher but he didnt have the skills to pry open a defensive wizard like toney to create that scenario in the first place. He had he talent but his handlers rushed his development and put him against holmes too soon before the substance abuse kicked in. Had it not but for the cut stoppage, jimmy young would have been a good test for cooney at that stage. Young was past it however so not too much can be drawn in comparison to the similar toney.

Toneys chin held up in back to bacl wars with samuel peter and rahman who had genuine world class power. I just dont see B level limited arsenal hook happy cooney being the guy to shatter it. However, given his size, reach, youth, and body shots icoupd see him bullying and outlanding toney who realizes he cant win the decision and will either curl up and take the L or patiently wait for a counter opportunity.

If he does land a good counter to the chin, itll be "lights out". Cooney was stopped in his prime by holmes who had decent but not devastating power and the small average hitting light heavyweight spinx. If they can hurt him, so can toney who somehow manage to carry decent pop in his punches all the way up from middleweight to stop the durable holyfield.

Despite this i still think cooney wins 7/10 outside of toney managing to land a good solid counter shot.

Could Toney slip and survive Cooney sledgehammer left hooks ? GC
specialized feeding on hw veterans and looking sensation ko them.
Cooney though showed underrated skills in fighting Holmes and would
jab and hook to body to punish Toney. No ko as nobody ko Toney.
    Cooney on pts.

    Cooney wins by stoppage

Cooney could throw some mean body shots and they would open up Toney for some big head shots as cute as Toney was he isn't going the distance here

    Cooney too big.

No way on earth does any man who once weighed 175 or below beat him.

Cooney by decision and he'd look sloppy.

I could see Tony staying in real close and possibly winning an inside fight. Spinks did fine against cooney, so I think Tony might as well

Toney would definitely be favoured to beat the cooney that lost to spinks and foreman but against the Norton smash version.. Not to sure.

I can't see Toney hurting Cooney at heavyweight. And while he was a much better technician, I think Gerry's height and reach would negate a lot of that.. James was durable and never stopped as far as I know, but at the same time he also never met a puncher as dangerous as a 25 year old Cooney. If nothing else, Gerry's power would at least keep him honest and on the defensive..

Cooney by decision or maybe late stoppage.
