Cotto didnt quit. He just accepted and bowed to the new WW king, and lived to fight another day. Cotto will regroup and we will see him again.

i think any fighter would take the knee esp. when your having breathing problems... why take any more punches when your body gives up on you physically:patsch

He fought a tremedous, brutal, courageous fight and then quit when he couldn't continue.

I think saying he quit is the wrong way to word it, i define quitting as someone who has something left to give but decides to quit when things aren't going their way e.g. Duran V Leonard 2. Cotto had nothing left to give IMO, he was starting to take a beating and he was geuinly exhausted and ran outta steam which prevented him from making an effective, offensive attack. So on those term why was it neccesary for him to continue? He would of received even more uneccesary damage which could have led to ill fated long term effects, their has been plenty of times where a fighter is to brave for their own good and it never has a happy ending, Cotto was smart enough to realise that and think about his career in the longrun, not just the short term. Calling him a quitter is extremely disrespectful IMO, especialy coming from people who i bet have never steped into a ring or put on a pair of gloves in their lives.

You make a good case for why he had to quit. You don't need to redefine the word quit, the dictionary has several applicable definitions. If you have boxing experience good for you...many here do. The experience that is more valued in this debate however, is with the dictionary.

Cotto is a tough fighter...I have respect for him. He still quit.

the great warriors of the past like trinidad, robinson, even tyson would've gone out on there feet and get viciously ktfo before they took a knee from another fighter

in my opinion cotto was about to quit then got up and decided that he would rather the towel be thrown in, He ran accross the ring from margarito literally and went down on his knees without a single punch landing and he didn't get up straight away neither, if that ain't a sign saying throw in the towel I don't know what is, If I was Evangelista I would've seen that as a clear message from Cotto saying he can't win and throw in the towel, and that's exactly what Evangelista did
