Vic Darchinyan's next bout to be shown on free to air television AUSTRALIAN boxing will leap from the canvas today when Vic Darchinyan announces his forthcoming world title fight will be shown on free-to-air television - giving the industry its biggest shake-up in more than 40 years. The Daily Telegraph can reveal Channel 7 has agreed to screen live Darchinyan's bantamweight bout with WBA super champion Anselmo Moreno from Anaheim, California. The network will show the December 3 fight on its digital arm - 7mate. Apart from exposing Darchinyan to a potential audience of around 500,000 viewers, the announcement also represents the most significant development in boxing since the days of Jeff Fenech, Johnny Famechon and TV Ringside. Indeed, boxing sources last night suggested the last free-to-air coverage of an overseas world title was Famechon's final bout - a split-decision loss to Italian Vicente Saldivar in Rome back in 1970. Both Fenech and triple world champion Kostya Tszyu also had Australian world title fights screened live on Seven and the ABC. It's understood Seven executives will be monitoring the event closely - with plans to offer similar opportunities to fighters such as Danny Green, Daniel Geale and Billy Dib should it attract solid ratings. With a press conference scheduled for the Novotel, Darling Harbour at 11am today, Team Darchinyan were saying little last night. However, it's understood the incredible TV deal was struck following exhaustive negotiations between Seven, Darchinyan's manager Elias Nassar and boxing broadcaster Mark ****** - a close friend of the bantamweight who has been heavily involved in the Australian fight scene for the best part of 20 years. Talks first began several weeks back when Main Event - Australia's Pay-Per-View event channel - opted to overlook the Darchinyan bout for a WBA light-middleweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito on the same day. The Australian bantamweight was, instead, offered the chance to appear on delay. Yet now The Raging Bull will go head-to-head with Test cricket and the V8 Supercars - with the showcase expected to start around midday on Sunday, December 4. Taking Showtime coverage direct from the United States, 7mate will also screen the blockbuster co-main event between Mexican Abner Mares and Ghana's Joseph Agbeko - two men who have both previously beaten Darchinyan. Green, who is expected to be at today's announcement, welcomed the move in a press release last night. "This announcement is a massive boost for Australian boxing and to know my little, lunatic friend Vic is the pioneer ... I'm stoked, it's thoroughly deserved," he said.

Great news if it has a future. Im a bit surprised they have gone with a vic fight as a litmus test though. Vic doesnt rate in oz and thats why main event pass on his fights or show them on delay. And dib??...yeah he has improved and has a trinket but this is the guy HBO black listed and had some saying he was the most boring fighter to ever fight on HBO. I just hope it isnt just all about the main event. If channel seven do want to use geale, dib etc... I hope that some prospects get to use this platform to get some exposure too. A paul fleming type would seem a good fit. Khoders greed meant not one up and comer was showcased on any of their ppv cards prior to their last show. If this is great for the future of aussie boxing, put some prospects on the card and make the undercard quality.
I meant to add that the last world title fight on free to air that I can recall was Riddick Bowe vs Jesse Ferguson. I think Kostya v Leija was on delay.
