ive been going to the quarters, semis and finals of the iriush seniors since 1990 (**** i sound old, i was only 9 when my dad took me for the first time though).

and i can honestly say, hand on heart, that Darren was the best boxer id ever seen in the national stadium. (Brian Magee was actually second, seen him in some great fights)

i was delighted when Darren turned pro, as i truly was a "fan" of his.

his death will always be marred in mystery. unfortunetly nobody here will ever now the truth behind Darrens' suicide.

my own personal thoughts, if they are allowed, would be depression.

anybody that saw that documentary about St Saviours could see how fragile Darren actually was. it seemed he was so afraid of losing, or not performing to his own very high standards, that the fear of this could tip him over the edge.

in the documentary it showed Darren pulling out of the seniors because Darren was afraid he wouldnt do himself justice. when the fact of the matter was that he was so talented and just so damn good, he could have won the seniors being half fit. He really was that good

i still get a sick feeling in my stomach when i think of him.

as i said, i really was a "fan" of his, and enjoyed watching his fights so much. its just a massive loss to the sport. he was a great person!!

I completely agree, Joey Bartons comments on Gary Speed being "selfish" infuriated me, those are the words of a know-it-all **** who doesnt understand depression

they went out for a few weeks and broke up because she did a sexy photoshoot according to the evening herald paper.

i have said i do not know he was gay but im not the only one who will tell you they have heard it. people are acting as if im the only one who has said it when plenty of others have said it and have said they heard it from other sources.

and that was all i said in response to the thread starter. however, some tossrs on here have comprehension problems it seems. others are the "judge judy" of the forums.

people like sutherland and speed show you how ****ed up the world is. there are people out there who look so happy and successful but they got ****ing demons that they need to talk about. 2 examples where even their closest family can't put their finger on what happened.

The general risk group is men aged 16-25 but there is studies that have found that the rate of bisexual and gay men is three times higher to try and commit suicide! just to let you know. (Catania et al. 2002)

Gay and bisexual men may be more prone to harassment or pressure which can be factors in suicide. In that context, yeah - I'd need to read the report. If you have a link, I'd appreciate it.

But from the studies I've read and the one I witnessed, there was no evidence that it was especially prevalent. If you remove the sexuality from the equation, the reasons quoted in those studies are very similar: depression, harassment, inability to form relationships, recent break-up, etc.

Those are things anyone can be subject to, not just gay people.

And that's my issue with Lirva bringing it up the way he did - assigning being gay as a reason for suicide as if it's an explanation. It's not. There may be outcomes to being gay that cause you to commit suicide. But not just being gay.
