I was reading the rings breakdown of khan/maidana and they quoted some writer as saying he that eventhough he thinks khan is a great talent he would rate him alongside another english man Dave Charnley.Who the hell is Dave Charnley and is this a bit harsh on khan
Dave Charnley is one of the best British fighters never to have won a world title. I don't think it's harsh on Khan.
Khan is godly. Only read about Charnley in my old boxing ooks but he was thought to be one of our best ever so no harshness on Khan there.
dave was a helluva fighter,he had a war with the great emile griffith,after he finished boxing he invested his money in property and is a millionaire.
It could've gone the other way too - the trilogy, I mean. Excellent fighter with some outstanding wins. The man who went in second time around against Old Bones would've been a bit too tough and relentless for Khan imo. Dave got thumped by Griffith though, he had no business being in the same ring then or ever. He was already a bit shopworn in his previous fights but had managed to scrape a controversial though nonetheless good win over Kenny Lane in London which, if I've read rightly, had him in the frame for a crack at Ortiz's title (though I don't know if he was struggling to get down to lightweight by that point and would have never beat Ortiz regardless). Instead, you have his manager putting in him in with one of the best welterweight/middleweight's ever and a career ending beating. He could've done with the management that Jim Watt had.
My old man was/is a big Charnley fan he said the first fight was only seen as been close because of how BBC radio reported it. Brown was the clear winner for him. BBC radio liked to make out our guy was doing well and I think theres a few fights from around that time that people in this country view as close on the back of the legacy of those radio commentaries.
That's true I suppose. The UPI and a couple of other sources that I've glanced at had it very close with the UPI having it level going into the final round, though most other reports seem to have Brown winning by various margins. I suppose I was saying that Charnley could have gotten the nod, deserved or not.
