Long term, I don’t think its going to bring confidence when it comes to them potentially bidding for big time sports in the UK. I think we all know already that they don’t have a snowballs of making massive inroads in the US market for premium sports. I wonder how this may or may not effect Eddie and Goldenboy in the near future...worrrying times for the sport. This includes Sky and BT who are getting absolutely hammered with the loss of revenues. I called BT today to cancel the sports for the time being and the sound of almost fear in the voice of the customer services guy was quite apparent to me. He said himself, that they are having to pull out all the stops for customers including letting them run up a tab on unpaid bills without restricting their services. I just arranged to get a refund off the bill Instead and Sky are “pausing” the cost of my sports channels.
Why would they pay for content they aren't getting though? Fair play of the contract allows them to do that.
Na this just makes sense. If content isn't delivered they wouldn't pay. The NRL in Australia lose $13 million every week from TV as without the games the networks don't pay which makes sense. Killing the sport. Obviously the issue is the subscription base will take a hit as just as DAZN won't pay for content which isn't their subscribers won't pay for content not being delivered. This applies to any subscription service.
Exactly. It’s just being sensible. Plenty of businesses across the UK are doing similar. Of course this is going to impact their growth and hold them back a bit in the short-medium term but unless pandemics of this scale start happening regularly then I think they’ll be growing rapidly again once all of this has blown over. It’s a setback, that’s all but it’s not down to a fundamental issue with their business model, it’s a freak event.
Sky have a broad base of outlets which will prop up Sports. BT Sport and DAZN are effectively closed for business and don't have a wealth of archive material to use to keep them on air. Boxing will survive but the mega paydays may take a while to come back.
DAZN was dodgy as **** since it began. I don't know where their funding was coming from, definitely some shady business.
Sky do have the fallback of nearly subscriber having to take the base pack of entertainment to get the sports channels therefore having built in revenue. That said, if this situation continues (with the virus coming back in the winter) then Sky/BT/etc will have to adjust their rights strategy accordingly as paying billions for content that isn’t happening cannot be sustainable.
Man, you guys want DAZN to not workout so bad it's ridiculous. DAZN is about to launch in a number of countries. They are more than OK. And they have more sports than just boxing hahha. You guys are reaching when you say DAZN is in trouble. Now the PBC, they are definitely in trouble
I started the thread and it certainly wasn’t to wish for DAZN’s downfall and I haven’t seen any negativity from any of the other guys who have posted. We are all boxing fans and after being optimistic we would ride it out, It looks to me that this virus thing could be a real hammer blow to the Sport which may take a very long time to recover. Putting aside DAZN and the other broadcasters for a moment, right now we’ve got some boxers who are having to sign up for benefits.
I’ve always been 50/50 about whether their business model could work. There’s some talented people behind the scenes but they needed a lot of things to go right for it to succeed. The Coronavirus has been a total disaster for them and any other broadcaster that focuses purely on sports. The annual pass which always looked to be great value all of a sudden isn’t.
I think dazn should still be okay, but they need to be careful, not paying for the sport even thou it right could bite them on the ass. Like in an article i read, when in the past american sports have been suspended, the tv execs have still paid. If they dont pay for these sport then they should freeze people accounts until it comes back. someone said that dazn are fine even but pbc are on their ass, but why,
