Lyle and Layne weren’t to dissimilar. Lyle had little more pop Layne the better stamina. Lyle managed to squeak one by on Oscar. Layne for the decision.
I want to expand my response to this one. Being old or just washed up even if not old is another issue really. There is no question that one can be past it and losing all the time, and that should be taken into account. But an end of career losing skid is much different than not being rated. Tommy Jackson wasn't rated when he fought Layne, but his career was ahead of him. Alex Miteff might have been rated when he fought Chuvalo, but he had begun slipping and his decline would accelerate fight by fight. Cesar Brion was, I think, rated against LaStarza, but not when he fought Layne, but he had several good wins still ahead of him and would climb back up the ratings. Liston was rated under London, but who would even compare them because of the future trajectories of their careers.
This is called context. Something that an armchair boxrec "expert" like mcvey/liston73 neither understands nor cares about.
I’m leaning towards Bonavena. Layne was a good puncher but I think Oscar had the durability to withstand him early and had the right style to steadily break down Layne on the inside over time
