Yet interestingly, Dempsey-Brennan II was a war of attrition, and Jack dropped him for the count with body shots in round 12, the latest stoppage either Smoke or the Mauler ever produced in their respective careers. Although the FOTC is what it is, Joe was noticeably tiring at the end of Bonavena II, and reduced to slapping by the end of Manila, while Dempsey was coming on strong at the end in Shelby. A prime Dempsey's capacity to bring it over the championship distance should not be sold short, and he was starting to come on after seven rounds against Sharkey with eight more to go. (The controversial ending of that one was actually more unfortunate for the winner than loser. Dempsey really could have used several more rounds of work in preparation for Tunney II.)

 

Pachilles was Joe Frazier ever considered the greatest heavyweight of all time at any point in history??? For even any length of time??

Jack Dempsey was until probably the 50's considered far and away the greatest heavyweight ever period. Generally the stand out elite at heavyweight have always popularly been Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Johnson and Ali - Frazier just doesn't belong amongst this absolute Mount Olympus bunch - he was a great fighter in his own right but he isn't quite up in those echelons (if that's how it's spelt) - he just isn't - in the same way that Tyson just doesn't belong in that company etc - it's just silly historically to turn history on its head and try to say everyone in history has had it completely wrong - sorry everyone but the greatest of all time was actually Joe Frazier

 

This is the sort of deeper appreciation which is so often lost on the likes of Pachilles and the like - with you completely on this Duo

Dempsey was considered the greatest H/W until the 1950's??? Well I guess most of those judges were white. Joe Louis, his reign, his ability, will, strength and skill was everything that Dempsey's was not.

I don't even understand how anyone can compare Dempsey, Frazier and Tyson without looking at them in their eras only. Dempsey was good for his time.

a slower, smaller, less of a puncher with inferior bob and weaving like Frazier would destroy Dempsey inside of 2.

In so many films with Frazier, i never seen him show anything close to what Dempsey shown in 1 of only 2 films with him at his absolute best, against Big Bill Tate.

How many negro sportswriters, journalist or other panelists were in the position to vote in regards to the 'Greatest Heavyweight' until the 1950's situation you've referred to as proof of Dempsey's superiority as a fighter????

I wonder just how many on ESB, or in general as fight fans or historians, would currently deem Jack Dempsey's reign on par or better than that of Joe Louis???? I would like to think 0.
