DEMPSEY VS valuev

Let's keep in mind that Dempsey-Willard didn't have the neutral corner rule, too.

That vicious thrashing doesn't look as impressive when you consider that Dempsey could essentially keep punching Willard when he was down, as long as both knees were off the canvas.

 

He throws arm punches most of the time, though sometimes he does sit down on the. For instance, when he thought he had Liakhovic in trouble he threw some hard shots.

They were probably powerful, but not off-the-scale.

I would pick Demspey to TKO Valuev in the mid to late rounds. Valuev is not bad. If he had a bit more speed and power to him, he would be dangerous.

 

There seems to be a cut off point ,beyond which extra size is not only superflous but actually a hindrance big guys up to 6 6 or so seem to have good power ,but the larger men,eg James Beattie,Ed Jones ,Mike White,Ewart Potgeiter,Valuev lack it.The Klitschkos,Cooney,Fulton,Lewis,B Baer,all had power.

 

But with today's referee's stopping fights so much quicker, it kind of balances out.

 

Two factors are in play here:

-People that grow over, say, 6'6 tall are very rare. Hence, there a tiny talent pool for boxers that size. Valuev is one of the more talented 6'6+ men in history, but his athletic ability compared to a middleweight is nothing special.


-Bone and muscle strength increased with the square of size while mass increases with size cubed. An ant will barely notice the impact of falling from a 20 store building, a cat can survive the same fall while a human would be butchered and an elephant breaks its legs after as much as falling a few feet. For the same reason, a 30lbs difference is much more to overcome when it's between a bantamweight and a welterweight, compared to a heavyweight and a lightheavyweight.

 

i'm fine with your answer Chris ,but still a little puzzled why a guy 7 foot can't punch his weight.There again neither could Carnera ,and Mcline is not a big hitter.I agree Valuev ,compared to past giants seems to be athletic and has the rudiments of boxing,I read an interview with him ,he came across as a nice fella,still think Jack butchers him,Dempsey 's arms were very weary after belting Willard around ,I suppose its a long shot that Valuev outlasts him.Wonder if Valuev could out Jeffries Jeffries? Might put that up as a thread to wind up Mendoza!

I don't think Valuev could outlast Dempsey (in a head to head sense), but i do think he could make it to the final bell. His stamina is pretty good.

By the way, i think McCline can hit pretty hard. Just that his lack of aggression, stamina and skill holds his KO percentage back a bit. But if you consider that he floored Byrd, Brock, Briggs and Peter 3x: he has some power.


I think Jeffries and Valuev are a bit similar in that they both are very durable and a lot bigger than their opponents. However, Valuev was relatively protected early in his career while Jeffries clearly wasn't.

 

I agree completely with this. Unless evident emerges that Valuev is not impervious, I have to assume he'd go the distance.

Recently, I rewatched Dempsey through all 15 rounds against Gibbons. Despite a lack of experience going long distances, and the fact of coming off a two year layoff, Jack's legs and footwork remain superb throughout the defense in Shelby, and he sustains a brisk pace, finishing strongly. Valuev would not have been able to use his size effectively to wear Dempsey down.

Jack would have had speed, mobility, and effective power over Valuev. As Bruce Lee put it, "Strength is good, but if you can't use it quickly it's of no avail." Dempsey would probably be under Valuev's beltline much of the time. As had previously been pointed out, this would not be Jack's tallest opponent, but possibly his biggest target.

If Dempsey couldn't hurt him, he'd still be moving in and out, circling, and delivering shots to a body impossible to miss. I don't see Valuev being much more than a heavy bag for this one.

 

Its ok guys Considering Chris Pontius seriously believes that Sonny Banks was not killed by Leotis Martin and died from mysterious circumstances, you can't really be surprised at this one. It's actually a small step up from his sonny liston embarassing posts.

 

It's like this:

Fulton's manager proposed a multi-pointed proposition on why Fulton should fight for the championship against Willard, one of those points being that, supposedly, in 1915, Fulton floored and man-handled Willard in a 3 rounder.

To what validity there is in what actually transpired is hazy, but the papers of that time period do indicate that Willard was not too hot on Fulton and welcomed the smaller (likely easier?) Dempsey after he let them collide, which was probably the plan after the numerous Willard/Fulton cancels.

Fulton was prone to shake in a strong breeze, but he had a strong heart and could fight hurt - the story of the Dempsey fight it he got caught clean with a body punch, left hook and right smash after smiling with his left low.

Fulton could box very well, and stories of his 'stiff legs' are countered with praised accounts of his 20 round decision over Dan 'Porky' Flynn and punch variety in finishing off guys like Frank Moran.
