"Or I hear someone mention the 1951 middleweight title fight between Ray and Jake Lamotta -The St. Valentines Day Massacre- and my mind automatically goes the last few seconds of the fight, as portrayed in articles as well as in the movie "Raging Bull," where Robinson has Lamotta pinned against the ropes and gives him what is projected to be an absolutely horrific beating. The portrayal of it in the movie was particularly gruesome and almost made the ROCKY movies seem tame by comparison."

Very interesting Ice. I think that you are absolutely right and that recollections do get distorted over time, so that the "popular" impression about a given fight may not reflect what actually happened in the ring. As you make clear in your piece, the only way to truly know what happened, for oneself, is to view the fight in question. Most people don't have the time, or opportunity, to view all these fights, so they simply go with what they've heard or read. And for fights without film, outside of reading primary source accounts, there's really no way to get any idea of what really happened.

Interesting topic - thanks for posting it.

THANKS a lot, my man. And, like I say, I grew up believing Foreman just murdered Ali until the end of the 8th and, man, that is FAR from the truth

Scorsece (sp), did base the fights on the actual fights but he obviously dramatised them.

Realistic boxing movies are rare - think we´ll have to live with it.
