Jeff Lacy is very important to the Brits and I have no idea why. Jeff Lacy was not very popular in America which is why he went over to England to fight Calzaghe in the first place. In fact they both beat up a fair share of cans and journeyman between them. He was Andre Berto before Andre Berto, a solid guy against low level fighters who was a stepping stone for world class guys. A GATEKEEPER.

But I loved the way Joe mentally broke him down ! Jeff was tough enough to weather the full fight but Joe got in his head
These fights are different to all other fights I would not mind betting Jeff had fully physically recovered in a few days >But what Joe did to him mentally he will take to his grave
Nasty , cold and calculated way to destroy a man but just pure pure class

I don't know why it's still referred to at this time. It's well over a decade that Lacy got exposed, and it really was just that, being exposed. It gets celebrated as if it was some great win, but everyone now knows that Lacy just wasn't all that in the first place. A frontrumner, who got spanked by every single good fighter he faced in the ring, as he even was RJJ's last big name opponent that got clearly beaten. RJJ did nothing since, nothing

Still feel bad for Lacy to this day, the real Boxing fans knew he was getting thrown in way out of his depth but his promoters just saw Dollars and the arm chair fans are quick to soak up and believe hype. He was built up to be way better than he was and becuase of the style and skill of Calzaghe he was made to look a lot worse than he was.

I think it cuts both ways Willie. Brits try yo elevate him to a potential ATG who got Vargas'd and Americans try to claim he wasn't ever hyped that much to begin with.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. Yes, he wad hyped - SRL was saying he was a mini Tyson and such - but he wasn't a ppv or p4p draw. He was in a similar place to Spence when he went on the road to dethrone Brook.

true but less than spence today, spence has some decent wins now.

there are more accurate examples than spence who is too good for that comparison. Lemieux would be a better matchup, ifnhe hadnt faced 3G straight away.

Naw, most people in US thought that he was going to beat Calzaghe, including me and my friends (pro boxers) I was watching it with. It was one of those fights were the loser got ruined and never looked good after. I never underestimated Calzaghe after that.

yes it made sense to pick the major title holder over a guy who had held a worthless one for 8 years. Even today you'd pick the WBA champ over the WBF one every time.

but calzaghe proved that night who was major and who was minor between lacy and him.He showed that Lacy was just another David Lemieux.

Cracking work joe, bit late winning a major world title at 34 years of age, but still good work.

Lacy was the goods. He just got the prime beat out of him. Just like Vargas vs Tito.

His name has become a byword for an even fight at the bookies where one fighter gets totally beat up and shown to be completely out of his depth. That's why.

This fight also typifies the mentality of a lot of American fight writers/ fans when one of their heavily touted fighters gets beaten by a better man. In the U.K., fans will be disappointed and maybe have to re-evaluate their goals for their guy, but will still turn out to support him. Over in the States, there's a lot of "Who? Nobody thought he was the next big thing, we all knew he was useless honest. The king is dead, long live the next next big thing".

For those with short memories, have a look at what the writers for some of the main sites thought.
