Qawi later said that he learned to fight on the streets and that boxing came naturally to him. He was just a natural talent in that way, aside from all his physical disadvantages in height and reach. He simply enjoyed beating people up.

I think you need to watch more Qawi. Nothing that cool about purposely embarrassing an old, completely, totally shot fighter who should have been retired for some time. There are better memories to have.

I'd say Qawi's most memorable fight was his first fight with young Holyfield. Qawi was the much smaller man in stature but he put up a great fight by drawing an inexperienced Holyfield into a brawl, which Holyfield eventually won out through sheer heart.

Qawi would have taken out any other young fighter with the effort he put up, unfortunately he ran into a future great. Qawi was a tank in this fight, walking through numerous combinations of Holyfield in order to land his own punches. When he did manage to avoid Holyfield's combos, it was spectacular to watch.

Watched the fight again. You are right. Maybe I was thinking about Leon.....:think

Michael Spinks put on a jabbing clinic in the middle rounds. The way he used it to disrupt Qawi was beautiful. Qawi never managed to cut the ring off. He allowed Spinks to jab, move laterally, circle, jab and then uppercut/right hand.

That fight was terrific in style contrast.

What Qawi acomplished, despite being only 5'6 and regularly fighting guys who were over 6' tall and getting a late start in boxing still amazes me. His short, compact frame were used to his advantage in his fights. Short people who regularly fight much taller oponents should watch Qawi.

Qawi is one of the first great LHWs I'd want to see in a fantasy match with Ali. With his counter jab, he might have given the GOAT more headaches than commonly suspected. Excellent at cutting off the ring by keeping his lead foot between his opponent's feet. (Ike wore the longest trunks then seen since Archie Moore. When asked why, he said it was to conceal his leg movement.) Flash Gordon admired him tremendously, comparing his ability to slip shots on the way in favorably with Napoles. Being an inch shorter with an inch less of reach than Langford, he actually stole some rounds from Foreman.

Interestingly, Quenzell McCall and Wesley Mouzon said that he was by nature a long range boxer, that he actually had to learn to fight inside.

  9. qawi was indeed a mean guy. he used to prey on fresh meat in prison and **** all the young guys, just as he would have done to sam langford
