Can you recommend any fights that display what being a ring general is all about, my understanding is a little blurry. Not quite sure how to explain it. Thanks
Those who dictate the pace of the fight are the ring generals. If the fighter is a boxing specialist facing a pressure fighter and he's able have the pressure fighter fight his fight or is able to get the better of the pressure fighter fighting his own fight, then he is the ring general. Hopkins against Tito is a good example. Whitaker against Chavez and Nelson are good examples. Napoles always showed a good ability to do this, but I think Monzon would probably be the best.
Ring generalship is quite easily defined. It's the ability to get your opponent to fight the fight that suits you better than your opponent. Some vastly different recent fights with examples of great ring generalship: Mayweather-DLH Hopkins-Trinidad Hatton-Castillo Bika-Calzaghe (even though Bika lost the fight) Ruiz-Rahman Quintana-Williams I John-Marquez Wilson-Nwodo Calzaghe-Lacy is arguable, even though a lot of people cite it. I honestly feel like Lacy fought his best style, just Calzaghe figured it out. Calzaghe didn't drag Lacy into a different fight than Lacy wanted to be in, he just beat the **** out of him. Hopkins and Winky are probably the two best ring generals out there right now. Both consistently get their opposition to look bad by making them fight their fight.
nate cambell vs diaz... i thought cambell totally took control of diaz and showed him that hes the older more experienced and trickier fighter... i felt like i was watching a senior in high school vs a freshmen in high school
That's another great example. I don't think Cotto is much of a ring general at all. Name a fighter who he's made them change their style just because they're facing him? I can't think of any.
If you can find it watch Bhop against Antwun Echols 1. Echols was a muderous puncher and Hop tried to trade with him and got almost KO'ed out on his feet. He was barely able to keep upright but then he adjusted, got on his bike and got behind the jab and boxed Echols silly. It was a good example of ring generalship.
