Pipino Cuevas was all but done after losing his title in devestating fashion to Thomas Hearn's, being "fed" to Duran a short time afterwards. Starting fighting when he was little more then a boy will do that to a fighter. Kelly Pavlik's reputation sure fell apart after last weekend. :think
Michael Grant, although anyone who had been watching saw it coming. George Foreman in his first career is an arguable case: he seemed done after Ali ripped him apart mentally, and it took him more than a year to get back into the ring for a non-exhibition bout afterward, and he nearly got knocked cold by Lyle. Still the heart he showed in that fight helped a bit, even if it proved forever that his aura of invincibility was gone, and he looked good against Frazier, even if you had to figure Joe had nothing left after Manila. Then Jimmy Young, of all people, knocks him down and retires him... Would Davey Moore count?
When Pavlik takes out Rubio his reputation is okay again and the loss to Hopkins will be remembered as him fighting a bigger atg. Imo that´s no shame. DM fell from grace very fast in Germany. He came to Germany before the fall of the iron courtain, worked here, learned most of his boxing here, took on the German citizenship, built quite a reputation and followership during his career but when he was on his way out he got very disrespectful toward his adopted country, took his Polish citizenship back and was quickly forgotten/ignored by the German public.
It was all downhill for Lionel Rose after being destroyed by Ruben Olivares, he was 21. Even past his best though he was good enough to beat future lightweight champ, Guts Ishimatsu.
Donald Curry: he did win another belt after Lloyd Honeyghan, but still, never really recovered. Mike Tyson: undefeated HW champ of the world to convicted ****** in a 2 year span. Buster Douglas: HW champ to a fat punchline in an 8 month period.
I think alot of us felt though that once he was matched against a more proven puncher with any kind of impressive KO streak that he'd be gunned down. He looked impressive against light hitting tomato cans, but the warning signs were there against Gomez and exposed by Prescott. Kahn has youth, speed and decent enough fundamentals but a shaky chin and was majorly overhyped from the get-go. He was always going to look far less impressive against a classy fighter. He's been exposed for good now and that's that. Whilst in hindsight Curry may have been a bit overrated, he had developed into a marvelous prospect and had bigger potential and more talent than Khan ever did.
Yeah, he did decline very noticably in the few years after that winning effort against Curry. Still that was sure one brilliant performance, though. :good
Not that it happened early in his career, but after the two beatings against Marciano, Charles was losing to horrible - by comparison - fighters. Roy Jones also went down pretty quick since the Tarver fight.
Honeyghan was a top fighter. Seemed to have the world at his feet but fought the worst possible fight against Starling. Played right into his hands. I heard since that lloyd had very bad hand problems, didn't think he could last the distance and just threw everything he could early on. Real shame...
