Certain substances, like marijuana for example, can attach themselves to fat cells in our body. Long after you may have used a substance it can be found in your system because of its existence in your fatty tissue. Futhermore, if said fat is broken down for use as energy, in this case, as a fighter is training, that substance, even in a minutiae, can leak back into the system.

This could be the reason it wasn't in his previous tests and when it did finally show, it showed up ever so sparingly.

Then again he could be using Meldonium full time and his flush or masking agent failed.

But I just wanted to throw a legit medical reason
    to support a non-nefarious scenario.

Weed doesn't stay in your system for 8-9 months.

Alot of scientist around here all of a sudden. You guys should be at Harvard curing cancer but you rather put that knowledge to work on a boxing forum.

Is Meldonium one of those certain substances?

And on an unrelated note, what kind of fat guy smokes weed and then trains like a boxing champ to release it?

Some of you guys need to read wtf I said instead of "reading into it".
If something is in your fat cells, it stays there until the fat is metabolized.
So, Saintpat, I don't know if Meldronium is one of those substances. I posited a theory, that's all. If it's a substance that's found in food naturally, then it stands to reason the body can have a residual level of it in fat. And as for your inane comment, no one smokes weed and trains to release it. Releasing it comes as the bi-product of vigorous physical training which requires the body break down stored energy(fat). Once a fat cell is broken down, its contents pass back into the blood stream.
Up next, Alexthegreat, marijuana is only in your system if it's passes through your blood steam, marijuana that's been metabolized into your fat won't show up on a **** test because the metabolites are inside of the fat cells not in your blood stream.
Finally, Willie, this information is open source and you don't need to be a "scientist" or feign being one to know it. Spend less of your time trolling and read ****, maybe you can with a legitimate counter point.

There is going to be a court case over this. Let's see Haymon and the WBC prove Povetkin was taking the banned product post the date it was outlawed. In my view it's nothing but a shameless duck and hopefully they'll be hammered in the court.

    Great. Another troll.

To seriously respond to your moronic comment. No LSD does not stay in your fat cells because it's not processed through the system like Marijuana. Cocaine, LSD and a slew of other drugs are flushed through the system differently.

    Again. Read.

You don't have any proof to what you're suggesting so you best take your own medicine.

I have no proof that Meldronium acts by binding to fat receptors. This is true.

But my medical "reason" about substances that bind to fat and can show up in the body after said fat has been metabolized, has oodles of documentation.

MJ takes about 30 days. But if you a habitual pot head and a fat butt also I would give it 2 months to clear out.

I don't know how likely that is for an athlete in camp. What's more plausible is that the gradual dialing up of the test strength as the fight nears is what caught him. The weeks preceding the fight, the agency is getting a baseline, figuring out where their samples anomalies are and as the date closes in, they start turning up the strength and pin pointing.

Here's an excerpt with Dr. Catlin about dialing up or down test strengths.
