Feather Fisted Champions

I'm tempted to say Winky Wright is feather-fisted just because he doesn't score KO's, but I think everybody knows that's a lie.

His punches aren't going to knock people out, but they bother good boxers (Mosley, Tito, Hopkins...).

 

People need to think about what they're saying here. Feather fisted implies somebody does not have the ability to hurt a top level guy on a regular basis. Malignaggi and Calderon would obviously qualify. Somebody like Joe Calzaghe? Give me a break, he hurt Kessler with a body shot and knocked out Byron Mitchell in 2 rounds! He has 32 stoppages ffs...

Pernell Whitaker could definitely stun guys with his straight left

again, jmm didn't put barrera on his ass. it was the other way around.

 

Eddie Chambers should be mentioned. I don't think he's going to be hurting any Heavyweights anytime soon, with his technique and posture.

But still, I don't think it's fair mentioning Marquez as feather-fisted. He has fine technique and strength. There's no way a feather-fisted fighter would rock Pacquiao and wage war with him for twenty-four rounds. :hey

 

You were right on the money. Marquez, a man with 35 knockouts, and who has visibly hurt Pacman, is not feather fisted.

 

But actually, thinking about it, Marquez actually HURT Barrera before he was knocked down.

I recall it fairly clearly now- he landed a right hand, an uppercut, and had Barrera staggered, which left him vunerable for the counter punch from Barrera.

So Marquez indeed displayed his power in that fight, too.

 

Hahaha, where are people coming up with this image?? Someone probably clipped Pac knocking down Barrera and added it to the Marquez Barrera fight.

 

ahh i no JMM record im a big fan, i just never understood what was ment by feather fisted thats all , he aint feather fisted now that selfkill has explained what it means! but i thought feather fisted ment fighters without huge power! which i dont think marquez has he is a fighter with great technical skill and uses his timing and accuracy to win fights! not his power behind his fists

 

Feather-fisted is not defined because it's just an expression used...no true definition for the word, therefore there is no line that sets someone apart from being feather-fisted or a light puncher...it's all opinion, but I don't think JMM would be considered feather-fisted.

 

If your punch is akin to being tickled by a feather that would suggest to me you would rarely hurt any top level fighter. Clearly guys like Calzaghe, Wright and JMM would not qualify. They could all potentially score a stoppage or at the least hurt a top 10 guy

 

But what if a guy like Wright never has any intention of putting his weight behind his punches?

In retro-spect, say, fifteen years from now, will everybody here in the boxing forum be in the classic forum saying Wright was a feather-fisted Middleweight?:nut :nut :nut :nut

 

They probably will, because forums seem to be commonly inhabited by imbeciles

One must also consider Wright is a natural 154lb fighter. At his peak anyway. He most definitely had some pop there. As it happens I believe he has enough power to discourage some of the lesser 160 guys. He might not hurt Abraham or Pavlik, but the rest...well...they suck
