Without stating the obvious, to me his hype feels like its always been the combined effect of talking a big game (especially on social media) a ripped physique, and an ex world champion father.
Agreed - Jr is not active enough for anyone to say he has a good engine. He is clearly in shape, but it’s not like he’s an active pressure fighter. He is slow on the outside postures a lot and and paws before letting go a combination. He fights in bursts, not exactly the same ilk as Leo Santa Cruz.
I know what you’re saying and I fully agree. These reasons, however are the type of things you expect from people who don’t know what they’re on about. This forum has very knowledgeable people on. Far more knowledgeable than myself a lot of the time. Yet many still believe in this guy in the extreme. For years I found it weird but amusing. I knew one day he’d get knocked out and it’d all be over. Now though. I can never see him fighting anyone good enough to do that so I believe the myth will live on. A false reality may be span about the young man who was a warrior and would fight anyone but wasn’t given a shot. PS Boss name mate haha.
Agreed. This coupled with his lack of any boxing skill means he’s been destined to go nowhere. People will say he’s achieved great things already. Let’s be honest though, the match making has been tremendous.
Yeah that's it, it was non-purists mostly who bought into the CEJ hype. My non boxing fan cousin watched him obliterate a journeyman on C5 and would not stop talking about how he was the next undisputed champ afterwards. At the time, many agreed, and I got laughed at when I said Billy Joe Saunders would probably beat him (none of them had heard of him, so I was obviously in the wrong). To be fair Jr gave a decent account once Billy gassed landing some of those wild uppercuts, but I think 9/10 times Billy wins.
