That's not a question that can really be answsered. There is no right answer. Check out Walcott: http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/joe+walcott/video/x6t5v8_jersey-joe-walcott_sport
I have to confess that when this subject came up previously, I severely underated Walcott's abilities in this regard. Watching a couple of his fights recently, I realise I got it wrong ,the man had perfect placement and balance, his "cake walk "was a thing to behold .Louis must have hated his guts by the end of their first fight.
probably true but you cant help but nominate maraad hakkar in his showing against bernard hopkins. that was fancy stuff in there
Man, that was great...I played it twice..those jazzy, effective walkaways and pivot steps...just as effective in their own way as Ali's dancing.
4 guys worth mentioning [YT]VlpZ5-bw_GI[/YT] [YT]QJ9NZvGhAIU[/YT] [YT]aRlGWm7m8Eo[/YT] [YT]Xq09V2AeKvo[/YT]
Walcott's is immense i must say, and he's not normally an out and out choice for any particular facet of the game. Very nice one McGrain. Robinson's even past his prime is superb. And the legs are supposed to go before the other stuff, wow.
Technically Carlos Ortiz' i nice, i'm not sure how it rates, but i always thought he was very nice at stepping in, potshotting and getting out. He could also box well, and could cut off the ring. For me it's a bit like Hopkins' over the stretch of his career, not something that might jump at out at every fan, but a constant (and maybe subtle) part of his success.
Two Lightheavyweights come close Loughran and Conn. Tunney was very good. I liked Hagler's balance too.
No mention of Whitaker yet? The way he could evade shots and make the wildest upper body movements while retaining balance and often, punching position, was amazing... and while i wouldn't say unparalleled, there are few in the rich boxing history that could do that so consistently.
I agree with you that Whitaker deserves a mention, but he tends to get **** for his footwork, crossing his feet etc.
Yeah i was thinking if i mentioned him then someone would just say his biggest asset in terms of defence was his reflexes. But very nice point on the retaining of balance, good one. At 135, i thought he did some things wrong regarding his footwork. Just goes to show how much in some cases effectiveness overrides technique. For boxing off the backfoot in his prime he was immense.
