That's a bit of a blow to the British boxing hopes.

There has been rumours about him struggling on the scales for quite a while, so no great surprise

    what a numbskull!

probably put too much muscle on, but jeez don't they have nutritionists to control this sort of thing? never mind still plenty of chance to get a medal, i like the gyppo bloke!!

    That's pretty disapointing.

    Hopefully he'll turn pro.

That does not sound good for Gavin. He was hoping for some success at these games so he could do a Khan with post Olympic media attention and turning pro to make lots of money.

I did not think much of him and thought he would not make much noise in the pro ranks, but the kid has been working all these years to fight at the Olympics so it is quite sad to see the Olympic dream cave in for him over weight issues.

They must have nutritionists etc etc in the british setup so a bit dissapointing that he fails to make the weight.

The gypo is quite handy and imho much better than Gavin.

I get the feeling he let a lot of the hype get to him; he's only a boy and when people are saying you're a world-beater as a young amateur the temptation must be there to sack off the gym and go and be interviewed for the tv instead. Dunno who's in control of his training but they've been a bit lax here.

No it is actually the other way around. He has been in the gym too much, too many weights and he has put on too much muscle. If it were a bit of flab he would have burnt that off within the last 2 weeks easily. But you cannot strip off muscle weight like that.

However the whole situation is ridiculous and I blame the GB set up. He won his last tournament at light welter, so either have him go for that spot in the Olympics or have absolutely everything in place to keep him at lightweight and make sure he does not pack on muslcle gain.

I cannot believe this to be honest. He has beaten everyone in his weight class and comfortably beat Tishenko the Russian who had not lost for 3 years.
He was almost a dead cert for a medal and a very very good shot for gold.:-(

to be honest he will still get offerd a decent pro contract. Coming in as a World and European champion is still an awsome achivment.

this will be a huge blow to the rest of the team. Gavin was carrying allot of the pressure on his shoulders taking it away from others.

He had Kerry Kayes doing his conditioning and got him on board because he was struggling with the weight. I posted his interview with Donald McRae in the Guardian a couple of weeks ago and he was talking about his struggle to make the weight in that.

Seems like he's just grown out of the division.
