The Hopkins win and the Jones win getting lumped in together is definitely a bit disingenuous. From memory very, very few people were actually picking Hopkins to win, but the win was still seen as very credible for Calzaghe. The Jones fight was a very different prospect as Jones was shot to bits.

Still, it's probably a top-three win for Calzaghe, and whilst it's worthy of praise, a scrappy split decision over a semi-retired 40-something career middleweight probably shouldn't have been in his best three fights.

Agree with most of what your saying bar the semi-retired bit. Hopkins went on to win the ring LHW title and compete at a high level for years.

Joe is however missing more prime champions off his record.

I say semi-retired because he lost twice to Taylor, didn't fight for a year and beat Tarver, and said that was his last fight. Then took another year off and fought Winky Wright at a 170 catch despite Wright really being a light middle who'd never been north of 160. The took another year off and fought Joe.

So whilst he wasn't really retired he spent a fair bit of time inactive. His achievements after do Joe some favours, but I wish it had been Calzaghe taking Pavlik's unbeaten record rather than teeing off on shot Jones.

Agreed, Joe was stupid not to box Pavlik. But at the time most thought KP was a killer.

True; the Hopkins Pavlik fight was from memory promoted under the banner ‘unstoppable’ and asked if anyone could derail the Pavlik express. Joe would have hammered him I reckon; a proper exhibition. I remember at the time people saying in the future people would forget the state Jones was in and he’d just have that name on his record. Well - I don’t think anyone has forgotten.

The jones win sums up joes career. Gets put on his backside by a shot to pieces ghost of a legend then tees off on him and showboats for the rest of the bout.

I was never sold on pavlik and remember coining the term ‘the great white hoax’ always thought prime Artur Abraham would have bossed pavlik.

calzaghe would have schooled KP but didn’t want any of him for some reason,

Calzaghe eats froch much like he did Kessler.
even though joe had a wasted career, he was a very good fighter.

i thought Pavlik swerved Calzaghe. Would have been a cracking fight though i think Calzaghe would have beat him.

I wouldnt say Calzaghe eat Kessler. Think he won it 8-4, was a very good competitive fight, even though Calzaghe clearly won. I remember having it 2 rounds each after 4 (think many did) and Calzaghe making adjustments brilliantly to start winning the fight.

I think he beats Froch (assume eats is a typo?) in a similar way to Kessler; the loser takes a fair few rounds but Calzaghe’s boxing skills take over later on. I still think if they fought a fair few times Kessler and Froch would win a couple.

Roy Keane is a legend, no comparison thank you.
    Keano boxes Froch's ears off.

I really hated Froch constantly going after Calzaghe but I actually rate how competitive he is
