[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Enzo hints at Lockett exit!
Enzo Calzaghe, father and trainer of Joe, would not be drawn on the issues surrounding his son’s controversial split from boxing promoter Frank Warren, but he did indicate that middleweight boxer Gary Lockett may retire from the sport. In an interview with Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour, Enzo said, "I’m happy with Gary. He’s having a well deserved rest. He’ll come back next week and we’ll have a chinwag together. It’s not like he’s walking away because he’s 31 years-old and at the end of the day there’s more to life than boxing. I hate the word quitting, but if he wants to do something else he has my blessing and if he wants to stay on board he’s got my blessing. Come next week we’ll sit down and talk things over."

Very disappointed if he does. Gary was in this sport for the wrong reasons. I really used to like his honest attitude but his just another comfortable SN fighter.

not too disappointed myself, i appreciate his honesty, but if he is just in it for the money, he wont be missed by the sport

Not a world class fighter but was capable of more than WBU belt. Shame he had business and money on the brain too much.

He's not good enough tbh , I'm not even sure he'd get the better of his domestic rivals .

    I would tend to agree.

    WBU/British level seems about right.

Who cares, he was nothing special and was lucky to get the payday against Pavlik.

Reading some of his interviews in the build-up to the Pavlik fight, it did seem that Lockett just saw boxing as a means to an end rather than something he was passionate about.

Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that...made his money, got 15 mins of fame, calls it a day with his brains intact.

Good point - refer to his interview in the edition of Boxing Monthly not so long ago.

It is a sad indictment of boxing that a guy can earn more for defending some meaningless title than the British or European one.

It was odd that he ended up as mando for Pavlik, bearing in mind he isn't even the best 160lb'er in England, never mind Britain.

I still think he could have a couple more good years fighting domestic guys at either middle or light middle.
