Was just hoping to see some thoughts/comments regarding the career of Genaro Hernandez.

Do you consider him worthy of the Hall of Fame? If not, where do you place Genaro in boxing history?

He is very close to being HOF but no-still loved watching him box as he was a true pro and a credit to the sport of boxing.Wish there were more champions like him.Always thought if he squared off with De La Hoya at jr.lightweight he would have beaten De La Hoya.At lightweight De La Hoya was just too strong for Hernandez.

He was a very good fighter. Maybe not quite a HOFer, but it McCuiggan can make it in, why not Genaro. He still managed to beat 6 world champions and a few other top perennial contender. He was very underrated in my book. Very tall for a JL, and with his very good boxing skills, he might have been able to beay a lot of fighters rated higher than him.

Not to cool choice of words Bill:patsch
As a cancer survivor i am glad to hear that his Cancer is now in remission he had 4th stage so this is pretty remarkable.

I do feel Genardo should be in he made a total of 12 title defenses thur 2 title reign 9 the 1st time and 3 during the 2nd reign and beat some good opposition. Thought he did well against Oscar for the first few rounds and had the fight even going into the last round. Oscar was just too strong for him.
I agree with the poster who said if Mcguigan is in then so should Chicanito. Thought he was a better fighter and has the better resume.

He clearly has the better resume than Barry. Genaro was competitive with Oscar until ODLH broke his nose and he quit. I wouldn't fight with a broken nose either. Coincidentally, the judges had ODLH ahead by a wide margin, which was BS.
Great to hear that about Genaro. He was a good guy and a class fighter.

Anarci,I remember that Genaro lost because Shane Mosley broke his nose in a sparring session before the fight. Genaro being the pro went through with the fight as it was his biggest payday. It was a good fight.

I also remember that he was not afraid to defend his title on the road.

I met him at Olympic auditorium the day of the Chavez Oscar press conference. I talked to him for a few minutes and I took a picture with him.
he was very humble and a nice guy.

The good news is that he is in remission.

Yey he was a nice guy ive also met him and his brother/trainer Rudy a few times, also saw him and Zack Padilla spar at the LA boxing gym right next to the Olympic(no longer there) they went to war like a real fight:yep THey fought pretty even. Both of those guys use to spar with Shane too
Also met him at the Hollywood Paladium when a comebacking Palomino kod Arredondo in the 1st round( Coetzee and Barkley also on that card) There was talk of a fight between him Gabriel Ruelas, and both were there at the fight. Had agood time got to talk to both of them

When last I heard, MB, things weren't so dire. Genaro was responding well to radiation treatment in Texas. His cancer's very rare, usually only seen in children.

  10. I rate Genaro highly, love his style of boxing and his record speaks for itself.

Definitely wasn't happy with the result of judging in ODLH fight but it didn't matter anyway because he quit!

He must of known something we didnt because an unbeaten fighter in a legendary local super fight doesn't spontaneously quit with a broken nose.

Very good boxer/technician, probably underrated; but fell short of actual greatness IMO.
