If a young Gil Turner was around today, I'd put him in with Pacquiao or Mayweather, he's better and more dangerous than they guys they've been fighting lately. And they dont seem to be able to fight each other. Gil Turner was 32-0 (26 KOs) and a real menace when he got in there with Gavilan. And that fight was a wicked battle. I think Turner's underrated, or overlooked nowadays. In recent eras he'd be the kind of fighter who'd hold various "world titles".
Very much agree Unforgiven...He was a weapon when he was coming up and pushed a lot of very good fighters to the brink. A poster on here compared him to a young Meldrick Taylor...obvious differences but clear simlarites between the two and how their careers panned out aswell. Both guys were in two of the most brutal fights Ive seen with two ATG's where they laid it all on the line to win and paid the cost later. With modern management practices Gil would certainly pick up a title up some point...I wouldnt be surprised if he started his career at 140 for a little while and moved up with similar success to Cotto...Cotto-Turner would be a great fight, Id be inclined to pick Gil there. He falls short against Mayweather and Pacquiao...Maybe the Mosley that took on Margarito could come from behind and beat him, maybe not. Prime Shane would take him but this more cautious and physically diminished version its a close call. I dont think he is a long reigning champ...but he would annihilate a lot of contenders floating around so easily people would be hyping the **** out of him.
Agree with most of what has been said. I'm a huge Gil Turner fan. I think he would beat any version of Shane Mosley. Without a doubt he would be a crowned champion these days, and a crowd-pleasing one at that. I have these Turner fights but am looking for more so if you have any drop me a PM. Fortunately not. I know the first Bobby Jones fight is out there and was supposed to be a great scrap. Also the Langlois fight which the crowd booed heavily thinking the Frenchman won the bout. The Castellani, Dykes, Martinez & Scortichini bouts all exist in some form or another as well. I'm always looking for these old fights from the 50's & 60's so if anyone can help out let me know. I have lots of interesting stuff to trade.
If we are talking a peak Turner, I wouldn't be surprised if he swept 147 today. A past prime Turner would probably still sweep 154-160 today.
