When he bit Samson Pou'ha, I thought it was kind of clever. Golota was hurt against a guy on the verge of gassing out, and it bought Golota time to recover, and he won the fight shortly thereafter. Didn't know it was a sign of somebody that panicked when things got tough, become emotional and lost control of himself. Not until later.
Golota is a fighter who dosn't do so well if there is no film. Imagine if the only record of his career that survived, was his boxrec profile (minus his early fights), and the same was true of everybody he fought. Might this be an example that boxrec warriors should take note of?
Good points there. The thing that frustrated me most about him was even after committing those flagrant foul against Bowe, not one of this could be chalked to rage or frustration. He nodded to the ref as if he accepted and understood the point deductions and even held his hands up to his face at the end of the match as he realised that he ****ed up.
great point janitor. it would definitely obscure his record and make him look like a journeyman talent. however, in the end his legacy would probably remain the same. able to consistency land big fights but never win them. a bigger, polish bert cooper
Golota was a legitimate contender: a genuine world-class heavyweight, and easily one of the ten best of his era. Golota was good enough that he could have been a top contender in any era in heavyweight history. I agree that it was positively moronic of Golota to have blown both his fights with the badly outclassed Riddick Bowe. On top of that, several of Golota's other losses were probably flukes, too.
I always thought that if you could put Micky Ward's brain in Golota's body, you would have the perfect heavyweight.
Does anyone know of any interviews that touched upon the subject of the disqualification? I really do wonder what was going through his mind.
Thats part of boxing though. You have to be able to do it all. Thats what separated him from Bowe. Even though Bowe at his best was a better fighter he no longer had his skills in tact, but his fighting heart was still there. Theres been plenty of great fighters who didnt have heart. Its hard to get punched in the face over and over and not get discouraged. Thats what separates guys. Golota wasnt great in all of his game either. He was a skilled boxer and had some size, but he couldnt do much on the inside like Bowe who could box well from the outside and inside. I do agree he was one of the best skilled fighters of his era but that skill level dropped off substantially from the previous era.
really ? skill level in d 90s was lower than d 80s ? i watched most of d 80s' HW title fights and almost every 90s hw title fight and i did not get this impression .
