We've had some shite one here recently, but here's a positive thread.... Tell us about the times a fighter took a risk that most people thought was going to go bad but instead came properly good. Way back in the day we had Honeyghan taking on Curry. Recently we had Calzaghe as "there for the taking" against Lacy. He was odds on to lose and gave a masterclass.
Well EVEN FURTHER back Honeyghan went to Italy as a big underdog to fight the unbeaten Italian Gianfranco Rosi. Honeyghan flattened Rosi in three. But Rosi was a pretty decent, and went on himself to claim alphabet titles at 154; somewhat ironically losing his first crown to a post Ragamuffin Don Curry...
If you get decked in sparring by a Junior, even if you are a world title holder, you will have to think: "Is this sport still for me?"
benn taking on mccellan was a huge risk, the guy at the time was the biggest puncher in the world and his fights only lasted a round. Don king offered benn terrible money to take on a tricky southpaw from America I cant remember his name but benn refused so king then said well we will bring over mccellan then to basically bash you up. huge risk but probably the fight that defines benns career
Yeah good shout I think Naz going to US and winning the kevin Kelly fight...another big risk as Kelly was decent and had a good rep. This fight made Naz a name in the US
Benn was on a no lose. I went, but had a covering bet (of my ticket and expenses) that McClellan would win in one, which I thought was the most likely result. By beating McClellan, Benn got kudos as a top ten pound for pound fighter for a short period. It was a win/win, because if he had lost, it would of been expected and the 'Benn' name still would of carried at least one more good pay day.
yeah but benns legacy due to that fight reads so much better for the win, I don't think the british publics love for the guy would of been the same had he lost, its the way he won the fight that made him imo an idol
Lewis waiting untill tyson was truly shot before getting into a ring with him. He would of still given Tyson problems at any age, but he obviously did not fancy it untill he felt 'safe'
