I agree, but what I am saying is it seemed such an unlikely win, that Benn had nothing to lose because even his fans (of which I was one) were figuring out who he might fight next after being steamrolled. Thus it was not so much a 'great decision' to fight McClellan but a no lose, very good percentage call.

A 'great call' would of been some average pro getting in a position for a big money fight. A 'great call' would of been a pretty ordinary amateur streaking the Olympics and getting a Million pound contract in which he had seemingly total control to name his opponents...

All great calls to take a risky fight which lead to bigger fights and has given them opportunities that fighting in the uk wouldnt have.

How many of todays pound for pound fighters have taken risks like that? Especially to say those fights wouldnt have been massive money.

A quick mention to murray fighting sturm and martinez and macklin fighting sturm. Great performances and were very unlucky. Much better than other supposedly top fighters failed far worse than these two.

 

Malignaggi going over to the Ukraine and schooling Senchenko, had he lost it would have been the likely end of him at top level but that win gave him a belt and kudos for the win he is still relevant today because of that win. Calzaghe schooling Lacey finally gave him kudos he deserved.

But the greatest decision in boxing history imo has to be hands down Jimmy Braddock fighting Joe Louis instead of Smelling, he lost the fight but got 10% of Louis earnings he must have made plenty seen as Louis was champion for 12 years. He likely would have lost the title anyway so fighting Louis was one smart decision for his financial future.

If this is an inference to Audley, how is that a great decision, his career in the pro ranks amounted to a bit of a mess and unfilled potential?

It was Micheal Nunn and i remember watching Benn on t.v tell that story Don King was trying to low ball him into fighting Nunn, but Benn was having none of it so King said "Ok motherf*cker i'm going to bring over the mini Mike Tyson to f*ck you up". Good story that.

But he made a ton of money for a number of 'little risk' fights. A legacy is nice, but money pays the bills and should be the primary motivation for fighting. So from that aspect Audley did great. As for his boxing legacy, I expect we would be in general agreement as to how it has turned out.

However that decision killed boxing on the BBC and also set in motion a Pro career of his personal unfulfillment and possibly the ability to become a world titlist so thats why he never seems almost 'proud' of the decision to go solo from the start
