Who do you believe had the greatest title run at a weight without changing weightclass or losing in between? I think a good candidate should be Marvin Hagler Beat Undisputed Middleweight Champ Alan Minter (top fighter who beat plenty of good fighters and was very tough) Avenged draw with Vito Antofermou (Very tough ex champ, plenty of good wins) Beat Mustafo Hamsho twice (very tough middleweight who could be a champ in some eras, wins over Benetiz and Cyze) Roberto Duran (not as best weight but would go on to cause upsets, showed his durabiluty and cut Hagler) Hearns (not as devastating as at 147 but still a large threat) Fulencio Obeljames? (future 168 champ and Hagler beat him twice) Tony Sibson (very tough fighter, not world class but was dominated) What do you think?
I know its not relevant to the question but beforehand Hagler also beat Briscoe, Munroe, Watts, Seales, Finnegan and Hart. Very impressive resume overall- he definatly earned his title shot several times over.
Benny Leonard had the greatest title run in history. For SEVEN years he held the title in a 218 bout career. He beat arguably the greatest bunch of lightweight Hall of Famers, during this 7 year run, and then retired. Johnny Kilbane, Freddie Welsh,Johnny Dundee, Lew Tendler,Jack Britton, Charlie White, Rocky Kansas,Ever Hammer, Soldier Bartfield Richie Mitchell, and a host of others. During his 7 year reign he was the lightweight equal of later welterweight Ray Robinson, by those who saw both fighters.... Who else fought and whipped eight Hall of Fame boxers in a 7 year title reign ?
Carlos Monzon and Eusebio Pedroza come to mind as does Bob Foster. I posted Foster although he experienced defeat in his heavyweight forays.
I only know Pedroza was a very sneaky veteran with a bag of tricks. What was his level of opposition like in his title reign? Thats one of the main factors in defining how good a title run was to me.
