What do you think was Greg Page's best performance? For me, it's his fight against Marty Monroe. Monroe was a very capable journeyman and Page dominated him. Very solid lists. Ward and Evangelista were decent efforts too. The way he ko'd Evangelista was notable, moving backwards and all, dropping him hard then finishing with a booming right hand not much later.

I'm not gonna lie I do really like the 80s Heavyweight era, for me it's a fascinating era full of very talented Heavyweights with all different attributes Page for his flash, Thomas for his ATG jab, and so on. As I said in another thread the 80s for me had the most talented Heavyweights of any era, it's just unfortunately none of them quite panned out due to their inconsistency.
I have a fascination with the '80s heavies too. Also amongst the group were two fighters with elite-tier handspeed in Dokes and Tubbs. Such immense (and ultimately wasted) talent.
Honestly if you look at this list. Tony Tubbs Carl Williams Tyrell Biggs Tim Witherspoon Pinklon Thomas Greg Page Michael Dokes Buster Douglas That's a hell of alot of talent right there, they all have something special about them. And i enjoy watching each of them at their best, probably the biggest waste of talent in any Heavyweight era in history.
Yeah i lived it. It was a period of great interest and seemingly big potential but ended up one of immense frustration. There were some superb scattered performances tho and some really good heavyweight battles amongst it.
I think Page would have been the best of the lot if he could have had Angie Dundee in that corner his whole career. Nurtured like Ali was. Even Giachetti, come to think of it. So many of those 80's guys did not keep trainers for long. Or even have the elite trainers working with them. Not too many top notch champions with mediocre or poor corners. That would have made a big big difference in pre-fight preperations.
Tim did have a fantastic trainer in Slim Jim Robinson tho Zad, and he had him well schooled at a very early stage. Extremely underrated trainer. I thought Tim was one of the better rounded guys, fundamentally, from his era. Page was all talent and barely any fundamentals but Tim was real good.
I think Witherspoon was the most well rounded aswell out of all the other 80s Alphabet champions. I think the issue with Witherspoon started when he was getting shafted by Don King. Then the weight gain and lack of motivation was more apparent until it finally caught up to him vs Bonecrusher. To be fair Witherspoon actually made a nice little comeback in the 90s, I thought he beat a good version of Mercer who was fresh off giving Lewis a close fight. I'm actually surprised Witherspoon was never quite able to get a big fight in the 90s, I'm sure he was ranked in the top 10 and could've had some good fights vs Holyfield, Foreman, Bowe, even a Holmes rematch imagine ?
