Post fight on Saturday and in a couple of other interviews since, Groves has said he was fighting exactly to plan but just got caught, and I'm wondering what this plan was... He was down on the scorecards and clearly losing, going into Froches half of the fight and after doing pretty much the exact opposite of the first fight where he has so much success. At no point early on did he stamp his authority on the fight or try to box Froch with any spite, let alone go for a knock out. Did he fail to implement the game plan or did him and Paddy just get it badly wrong?
I think they got it right. IMO they were trying to outpoint Froch. Pre KO the fight was fairly level with Groves starting to look the most dangerous. He tried to pace himself but got badly tagged. I think he would have still lost as Froch would have ground him down later on.
I had it 4-3 to Froch after Rd7. Groves had won the 7th and was looking strong in the 8th. I wanted Froch to win and at the point just pior to the KO I was a bit concerned.
Groves wasn't clearly losing - it was a very close fight. In the UK, where most would have watched with Jim Watt commentary, the general perception is Froch was up, because thats the way he called it. (5live commentary had Groves ahead though) In the US, where most would have watched HBO, the general perception is Groves was up, because thats the way they called it. I had Groves up by 2 and winning the 8th, but wouldn't have argued a couple of the other direction going into that round. It was tight, cagey and definitely in the balance before Froch landed.
Like the HBO team I had Groves up 5-2 and winning the 8th before the KO Groves has all the tools needed to beat Froch, just lacked the maturity to stay composed and execute the gameplan. Swinging wild hooks with his back on the ropes was the last thing he should have been doing in that fight. Still a great win for Froch
I genuinely don't think it is maurity. I think he loses his head when he has taken a few shots. It is a shame.
I think they were trying to nick some of the early rounds in the first 6 and conserve energy, then do what he did in the first fight for the last 6 to try and win on points.
two of the judges had froch up by 1 and the other had Groves up by 3. So if he didn't get KO'd he wins the round and is in control, in terms of the scorecards.
His plan was to last the 12 and not Gas like last time , he wanted to have enough in the tank to put the fut down late on like Froch usually does
He was pacing himself because he knew he couldnt fight 12 HARD rounds. This allowed Froch more success. Froch was have far better success stepping back from the right counter and was working very well to the body. There is no way GG would have beat Froch on points. Rounds 9/10/11 and 12 would have been deadly for him.
Where you watching it on Sky with the one and only Jim Watt's commentary.....? Groves wasn't clearly losing at all it was a close fight, I had Groves 4-3 up and he was winning the 8th before Froch detonated that right hand bingo shot.
