Not seen the fight yet but saw a few pictures and read that hall couldn't see out of his eye looked completely shut. How was he allowed to continue? im assuming he was still being effective and landing and avoiding punches but is there a rule that if the eye is closed cause of swelling the dr should be involved? genuine question cause i don't know
This is a good question I have seen fights stopped in the UK especially because someone has an eye swelled shut. I'm glad Hall did continue and he deserved to but the rule seems to be a bit iffy on this.
I watched the same ref allow Simmons to go on with a bad cut. He's consistent and Malinga's face wasn't exactly in a great way either. I get what you mean about the rule though but i don't think the doctor would of stopped it personally and i think the fight was now into the latter stages and i think it would of been a strange time to get involved. Hall was still winning rounds and giving Malinga trouble if he was shipping plenty and not giving any back i think ref should of been looking to get Doc in. But a rule's a rule so year he should of got him in i suppose to avoid any controversy.
If he cant see he cant defend himself. He lasted but was taking punches. If he could not see then he shouldn't of been allowed to continue. He was blessed he had a British ref. It's gas, when you see a ref stop George Groves because his legs wobbled and then you see a "hometown" fighter who's eye is completely closed, and he doesn't even give it a second look. I think Edwards was lucky Malinga was a soft puncher. Either way, it was a great fight but it was a disgrace that fight was for a "world" belt.
Simple answer because britain is getting as bad as places like russia and germany for refs and decisions. I was amazed watching the fight not just taht the fight was not stopped but that if i remember correctly the doctor was not even called in too take a look.If boot on other foot doctor definately called in and stopped.
i would rather see fights like Hall and Malinga contiue rather than Froch Groves like stopages becoming the norm.
As I said in a different thread: Good that the ref let the fight go on with the closed eye. Would he have given the opponent the same chance? People make too much of closed eyes. (Unless someone has actual evidence of high risk of eye damage.) It's certainly a disadvantage, and yes you could get hit with a punch that you didn't see coming... but a shoulder injury could be much more of a disadvantage.
