I've noticed a big difference in hands wraps; On TV I see fighters with with tape and gauze; at the gym I see fighters with simple over the thumb around the wrist handwraps. Why the difference? Are many different ways to wrap your hands for various effects? I've seen Freddy Roach wrap Manny's with tubes going down parallel to his arm.
At a guess I'd say it's to do with time constraints? I've seen videos of pros sparring where they're wrapped with gauze. I'd imagine it's better in terms of protection, but at the gym people put their own wraps on - it takes 5 minutes at most and protects you just fine.
I know most people in the gym tend to just use regular wraps; but I guess I was looking for a more advances answers on how you can wrap them with tape. I am very sure not everyone does it the same way; or for the same reasons.
Tape is just to keep the regular wraps in place. I've used tape to help keep the wraps down since sometiems my wrist wrapping slips down. When it's fight time, gauze doesn't keep itself in place so you use tape for that.
It depends what feels right for you and gives you the most comfort and protection. If you're confident to hit hard and not worry about injuring your hand, that's key IMO. I use the X type way to wrap, prefer it that way than others i have tried :bbb
Keep in mind that pro's who break a hand sparring are out of work. People working out at a gym probably have day jobs. The wrapping technique varies from trainer to trainer and I'd suspect they use slightly differentiation based on the specific fighters hands. For example, I'm sure Freddy could tell you all about the hands of fighters he's training. What special needs they might have, etc..
I think "slacker" put the hammer on the nail if a pro has any form of injure to their hands there out of work. When I'm at the gym I just use those Evergel gloves but wrap during matches. All about preference I would think
if you notice what your see them do on TV ,,when wrapping the hands they always put on more than they need above the knuckle's to try and make a bigger fist to fill out the glove & make it more compact creating a harder fist to hit you with,,thats my theory anyway :good
I do it with gauze.. much more solid fist with it and much much more support on the hand so no injuries and no knuckles scraping with heavybag work
