Hearns vs Mugabi

A very painful injury no doubt, but look at Mugabi post Hagler...

I think he did take the pay cheque and merely sign in performance too often. I know I felt cheated when I went to see him fight McClellan.

I think it is fair comment to suggest, Mugabi, who was by all accounts I have seen a nice man, was in boxing, a bit of a dog post Hagler.

 

Sure, his dedication and desire certainly plummeted after Hagler, and his ability and punch resistance too.
I give him the benefit of the doubt with the Thomas fight though.

 

Probably fair enough. If I am honest I was always a bit bitter towards Mugabi, as I had a few (non boxing) friends (it was a Bruno fight, main event), at the McClellan fight, and I gave The Beast the hard sale to them, and ended looking quite an idiot.

 

Hagler pulled out, injured I think.
Hearns-Shuler was supposed to on the undercard then too.

HBO wanted Arum to match Hearns with Mugabi instead, but that didn't come off.

Mugabi was also paid step-aside money in late 1984 I think, so Hearns could fight Hagler.

I suspect Steward didn't ever want Hearns to share a ring with Mugabi.
I'm not sure Hearns ever faced a "killer puncher" like Mugabi after perhaps Cuevas, either.

Hearns had chin issues.

I guess you hadn't heard about Mugabi being sparked in 1 by Terry Norris a few fights before that.

Yeah, the main event : Frank Bruno's big comeback bout ...... against John Emmen ! :roll:

 

I had seen McClellan fight before, Mugabi post Norris or not, was going to steamroll the bum...

As for Emmen, if I remember rightly by a strange coincidence, he broke/injury his leg/ankle after being flatten by The Bomber, the same thing having happen to Jacquot against The Beast, a couple of years before.

 

Mugabi was just completely shot, and McClellan was dangerous.

I don't remember the Emmen fight too well. He was in better shape than Chuck Gardner, that's the best I can say. I remember Boxing News rating Jose Ribalta as some sort of decent test for Bruno in his next fight though ! :-(

 

MUgabi was totally shot when he fought McClellan.Surely anyone who was actually watching his fights would have noticed this and not hyped him up.

 

You would think, but we are talking about the man who picked Bruno to beat Tyson in their rematch!

 

the promoters had no reason to make this fight happen promoters make fights that generate a lot of revenue hearns vs mugabi is one of those fights that would of had little interest:yep:think

In 1983, Mickey Duff made an offer to Hearns to face Mugabi at 154lbs. It was turned down. Mugabi wanted to face Hearns, badly too.

Contrary to what probably most think, I reckon Mugabi would have KO'd Hearns. It would only take one shot from Mugabi, & he would not let Hearns off the hook, no way!

 

Christ, by 1991, against G-Man, Mugabi was so ****ing shot... Mugabi was dropped 3X in round 1 with the last droppage laying Mugabi out on his face...

I'm convinced that layoff helped Marvin and hurt Mugabi. Mugabi needed to be active and kept razor sharp when the competition was going to be a Hagler.

The big thing was Hagler would sign to fight the guy. Marvin always did sign to fight anyone. But all those years for the Beast when he could not secure a title shot at 154 didn't help Mugabi. When he finally gets a shot, it's moving up in weight to take on a guy like Hagler. Hardly the easy road we see taken so often in the sport.
